Press Release January 26, 2026
BRAVE is continually increasing its footprint to help women in need with breast cancer, as less than 30% of women with breast cancer are fully aware of their reconstruction options.
Lisa Shumpert outlined three primary goals for BRAVE: "Expand the network of plastic surgeons to assist more patients, increase funding from donors, and continue to collaborate with Northwestern."

SAN ANTONIO, TX, January 26, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The BRAVE (Breast Restoration AdVocacy Education) Coalition Foundation is excited to announce the appointment of Lisa Shumpert as the new President of its Executive Board, effective immediately.

BRAVE was founded in 2012 by Dr. Allen Gabriel and Dr. Christine Grogan, who identified a gap in care. Lisa has a proven track record as a senior executive. In addition, she is the bestselling author of Team Turnaround - Spark High Performance in Your Direct Reports. In her most recent role, she served as Chief Human Resources Officer at Comar, where she brought her extensive leadership and organizational turnaround experience.

The mission of BRAVE is to address the unmet needs of women seeking access to breast reconstruction plastic surgeons. The Women's Health Cancer Rights Act of 1988 (WHCRA) aimed to bridge gaps in care, yet significant challenges remain, including:
-Difficulty in finding doctors who accept insurance
-Lack of insurance coverage for many patients
-Health disparities, whereby black women have 38% higher mortality rate than white women and less access to care.

Lisa Shumpert expressed her gratitude to John Gwin, who has effectively led BRAVE over the past two years, preparing the organization for future growth and ensuring it is ready to scale up.

Lisa Shumpert outlined three primary goals for BRAVE under her leadership.

"Expand the Network of breast and plastic surgeons to assist more patients, increase funding from donors, and continue to partner with Northwestern University to increase funding and education activities to help black women get access to care. We will continue providing essential resources to patients, making this a foundational goal."
