Dr. Kwan's medical training began with an Internal Medicine residency at Brooke Army Medical Center from 1992 to 1995, followed by a cardiology fellowship at the same institution through 1998. His academic background includes a Doctor of Medicine from Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine in Illinois, and a Bachelor of Arts from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Inspired by an early desire to serve others, Dr. Kwan pursued medicine as a calling and was led toward both health care and military service. He credits his success to being "technically and tactically proficient," and an ability to approach challenges from multiple perspectives. Mentorship has also been central throughout his career; he finds deep fulfillment in guiding students and colleagues, believing that teaching creates a lasting ripple effect across generations.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Kwan is also a Clinical Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he has been recognized as Teacher of the Year at both Brooke Army Medical Center and the University of Texas. His wife Bonnie is a two-time heart transplant recipient who previously served as executive director for Transplants for Children in San Antonio and is currently pursuing a master's degree with aspirations to counsel other transplant patients.
