Dr. Cohens has established a distinguished career in education and community service, marked by a steadfast commitment to student achievement and social betterment. For more than five years, she has served as chair of the division of general studies at Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina. In this capacity, Dr. Cohens supervises and evaluates general education instructors, oversees the developmental studies program and advises students, particularly those at the first- and second-year student levels. Her responsibilities also include assisting with pre-registration and registration processes, attending professional development workshops and participating in conferences. Dr. Cohens is recognized for her expertise in effective teaching practices at both the public school and college levels.

Before becoming a faculty member at Morris College, Dr. Cohens served for three decades in the Richland County School District One as an elementary school principal. During this period, she had her most significant impact by working with elementary students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Dr. Cohens's leadership improved students' academic performance and fostered strong relationships within the community, an accomplishment she considers the highlight of her career.

Dr. Cohens's compassion and dedication have consistently driven her work. She is known for ensuring that every individual seeking assistance receives support, either directly from her or through connections to appropriate resources.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Cohens served as an elementary guidance counselor from 1980 to 1983, providing critical support to young learners navigating academic and personal challenges. Between 1977 and 1980, she was a professor at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where she contributed to teacher preparation programs and professional development initiatives for public school educators. Dr. Cohens began her career as a faculty member at Voorhees College for two years.

Initially interested in business administration, Dr. Cohens soon realized her passion lay elsewhere and earned a bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in psychology from the University of South Carolina. She credits this foundation with equipping her to empathize with and effectively support individuals facing academic challenges. Driven by a desire to help others, Dr. Cohens pursued a master's degree in reading education on campus, followed by a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling. Recognizing the importance of advanced credentials for career advancement in higher education, she completed a Doctor of Philosophy in reading education, also at the University of South Carolina.

In addition to her primary role at Morris College, Dr. Cohens contributes to institutional advancement as a member of the administrative committee for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges on the Morris College campus. She also serves as chair of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on campus, further demonstrating her dedication to advocacy and educational equity. Additionally, Dr. Cohens's professional affiliations include membership in the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, reflecting her ongoing commitment to leadership development in education.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Cohens is actively involved in civic organizations and charitable causes. She volunteers with Harvest Hope Food Bank and Oliver Gospel Mission and is a member of Trustus Theatre. Her philanthropic contributions extend to the American Cancer Society Inc., Feed the Children and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Dr. Cohens was influenced by Dr. Aretha Pigford, who briefly served as her principal and encouraged her to pursue administrative roles, a pivotal moment that led to her long-standing success as a principal. Looking ahead, she plans to pursue a full professorship while expanding her consulting work, writing endeavors and professional presentations. Throughout her career, Dr. Cohens has exemplified compassion, dedication and an unwavering commitment to helping others achieve their potential, qualities that continue to define her legacy in education and community service.
