Both parents taught for over thirty years—her father as a high school teacher and basketball coach, her mother as an elementary educator who helped develop one of the first gifted-education curriculum in Mesa Public Schools. Her grandfather, Samuel Myers, was a college history professor whose interviews with Native American tribes are archived at several major universities, entitled "Listening to Indians".

Ms. Owen's commitment extends beyond the classroom through volunteer work within her local community. She has also been recognized professionally with a nomination for the Walt Disney Teacher Award in 2002.

As an author, Ms. Owen has contributed to professional journals. She is preparing to release her first self-help book, which closely aligns with the principles she teaches in her coaching practice.
