Dr. Wächtler's career in medicine is marked by a steadfast commitment to patient care, education and public health innovation. Since 2020, he has served as a physician in the public health service for the City of Munich, where his expertise in infectious diseases, internal medicine and hepatology has been instrumental in shaping health care strategies for diverse populations. His work has led to the development of integrated care models that unite university hospital resources with public health initiatives, notably in response to the migration crisis and the Ukraine crisis. These efforts have improved infectious disease management and fostered collaboration across sectors, culminating in presentations at national congresses and academic forums.
Before his work with the City of Munich, Dr. Wächtler served as an internist and infectious disease specialist at Munich Clinic Schwabing, an academic teaching hospital affiliated with the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich. He served at Munich Clinic Schwabing between 1988 and 2020, during which he was also affiliated with the Clinic for Hematology, Oncology, Immunology, Palliative Medicine, Infectiology, and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Wächtler gained comprehensive experience across multiple disciplines in these capacities, including internal medicine and infectious diseases. Notably, he played a significant part during the AIDS crisis, contributing to HIV and AIDS research and fieldwork, and witnessed pivotal moments in European medical history, including encountering the first European AIDS patients while in Frankfurt/Main.
