Mr. Wells concluded his distinguished career as a statistician at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, dedicating more than 35 years to public service before retiring. Throughout his tenure, he was responsible for receiving phone calls and responding to letters from individuals seeking statistical information, particularly regarding disabled veterans and those utilizing education benefits. His role required diligent research to ensure accurate responses, drafting correspondence on behalf of supervisors and serving as the primary point of contact for follow-up questions. Mr. Wells took particular pride in his ability to connect individuals with the appropriate sources of information, which he considers his most notable professional achievement.

Before joining the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in 1977 as a data analyst, Mr. Wells gained valuable experience at EG&G Mason, where he worked for over a year under a contract with the National Institutes of Health. His responsibilities focused on coding datasets for viral oncology research, further developing his analytical skills.

Mr. Wells honorably served four years in the U.S. Navy as an electroencephalograph technician. This military experience gave him technical expertise and a sense of direction that shaped his subsequent career choices. Mr. Wells received a bachelor's degree in biology from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in 1970 and a master's degree in biostatistics from Georgetown University in 1976. He remains an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Ancestry, reflecting his ongoing commitment to scientific inquiry and genealogical research. Beyond his professional life, Mr. Wells has contributed to various charity organizations and is civically engaged through these efforts.

In light of his professional achievements, Mr. Wells has received several plaques from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, including a particularly meaningful plaque presented upon retirement that acknowledged both his contributions and the positive impact he had on helping others achieve their goals.

Throughout his academic journey, Mr. Wells recognized the value of coursework in demographics and computer studies, fields he believes would have complemented his interests in biology and data management had he pursued them further.
