POULTNEY, VT, February 27, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sheryl Porrier has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Porrier has distinguished herself through a remarkable career in community recreation and education, most notably as recreation director at the Poultney Recreation Commission in Vermont. For nearly 40 years, she has launched and managed approximately 30 seasonal and year-round programs, ensuring that children from Poultney and surrounding areas—including participants from Connecticut and New Jersey—have access to affordable, high-quality recreational opportunities. Her steadfast commitment to minimizing participation costs has enabled around 600 children each summer to benefit from diverse programming, regardless of their financial circumstances. Her leadership extends beyond program development; she coordinates operations within a small-town municipal structure, serves on multiple town boards to support community initiatives, recruits and trains high school students for summer roles, and hires and supervises adult instructors to deliver engaging activities. Her expertise in coaching and engaging with children across various age groups has been widely recognized, reflecting her dedication to fostering inclusive environments where every child can thrive.
Prior to her tenure as recreation director, Ms. Porrier dedicated herself to education for four decades. She began her teaching career at Granville Elementary School in Granville, New York, where she taught fifth and sixth grades for more than 30 years. Her impact was felt not only in general education but also in special education roles, where she provided tailored support to students with diverse needs. After retiring from Granville Elementary School, she was encouraged by a former basketball player—now a principal in Vermont—to maintain her teaching certification. This led her to teach elementary education in Vermont for an additional eight years, including a full year focused on special education before retiring last year. Throughout her teaching journey, she consistently prioritized student growth and well-being, leaving a lasting legacy among colleagues and pupils alike.
Ms. Porrier's academic background laid a strong foundation for her professional achievements. She earned a master's degree in special education from Castleton University (now Vermont State University, Castleton Campus) in 1987 after completing a bachelor's degree in physical education and elementary education at the same institution in 1984. Her educational pursuits were shaped by the encouragement of her mother, who recognized her potential to excel with children and guided her toward this path. While Ms. Porrier initially aspired to become a photographer, it was through her studies at Castleton University, and particularly her involvement with coaching and the Special Olympics, that she discovered a passion for teaching and working with youth.
Throughout her career, Ms. Porrier benefited from the mentorship of outstanding administrators and supportive friends within the educational field. She attributes much of her success to these influences as well as the example set by her hardworking mother.
In addition to her work with the commission, Ms. Porrier has been an active member of the selectboard for the Town of Poultney, the local historical society and the women's club. These affiliations underscore her deep-rooted commitment to civic engagement and community betterment.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Ms. Porrier has contributed as a volunteer with the Chamber of Commerce, further demonstrating her dedication to community service. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to recreation and public service, she received the Outstanding Service Award from Vermont Parks and Recreation in 2016.
In her personal life, Ms. Porrier is devoted to her family; her spouse, their two children and her two grandchildren bring great joy to her life. Looking ahead, she is eager to deepen her engagement with the community by collaborating with young families who are moving into the area. She is committed to enhancing recreational opportunities that encourage outdoor activity for children and adults alike while sustaining successful initiatives such as crafts and sports programs that have already taken root locally.
