BOTHELL, WA, March 09, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Stuart B. Mitchell has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Mitchell has established a distinguished career at the intersection of biomedical engineering, entrepreneurship and scientific innovation. Since 2014, he has served as founder, president, chief executive officer and chief scientific officer of Novuson Surgical Inc., a company he created to advance surgical technology. Under his leadership, Novuson has developed a groundbreaking surgical energy device that employs high-intensity ultrasound to cauterize and cut tissue simultaneously. This innovation addresses critical limitations of traditional devices by reducing bleeding, minimizing procedural time and enhancing safety for both patients and surgeons. Dr. Mitchell's work at Novuson is supported by several patents and was initiated with National Institutes of Health grants that enabled the development of five prototypes. Despite the pandemic's challenges, he remains committed to bringing this transformative product to market, a process that typically takes more than a decade in the surgical device industry.
In addition to his role at Novuson Surgical Inc., Dr. Mitchell is also the founder, president and chief executive officer of Biomimetic Electrospinning Technologies, a position he has held since 2011. Through this venture, he has focused on advancing biomimetic materials and technologies that mimic natural biological processes for medical applications. He is also the founder and president of BioDesign Research and Development, which he established in 2005 to further research initiatives in biomedical engineering.
Dr. Mitchell's academic career includes significant contributions as a senior research engineer and scientist at the University of Washington from 2006 to 2015. In this capacity, he explored instrumentation and tissue response, contributing to the development of technologies that would later inform his entrepreneurial pursuits. Prior to this role, he served as a research engineer and scientist at the University of Washington from 2005 to 2006, following an appointment as a research associate in 2005 and as a senior fellow in 2004.
From 2003 to 2013, Dr. Mitchell was also an information technology consultant at Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services. A 24/7 veterinary specialty clinic that his wife, a retired veterinarian, founded and operated (with her business partner) for a decade before launching Novuson Surgical Inc.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mitchell has been recognized for his pioneering research in biomedical and ultrasound technology. Among his most notable achievements is demonstrating that stem cells can be effectively manipulated using ultrasound technology and showcasing how mechanical architectures can influence stem cell behavior.
Dr. Mitchell maintains an active membership in several professional organizations that reflect his commitment to advancing biomedical science and engineering. He has been involved with the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society since 2010, the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound since 2009, the Acoustical Society of America since 2007, IEEE since 2007, the Biomedical Engineering Society since 1997 and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers since 1995. He was also affiliated with the University of Washington's Engineered Biomaterials from 1996 to 2004.
His academic background laid the foundation for his achievements in research and entrepreneurship. Dr. Mitchell earned a Doctor of Philosophy in bioengineering and biomedical engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle in 2004 after completing a Master of Science in bioengineering and biomedical engineering from the same institution in 1998. He received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1996, following an Associate of Applied Science in engineering from Shoreline Community College in Shoreline in 1992. As the first person in his family to earn a college degree, Dr. Mitchell credits much of his success to the people with whom he collaborates, particularly his wife, whose encouragement and support was instrumental in his transition from auto mechanics to higher education, earning his Doctorate in Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Mitchell's early professional journey began after high school when he pursued certification as an auto mechanic based on guidance counselor advice. After several years working in that field, he sought greater fulfillment through higher education, a decision that ultimately shaped his future contributions to science and medicine.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Mitchell has demonstrated civic engagement through various roles, including serving as a ride leader for Cascade Bicycle Club since 2012 and as a member of the board of directors for his homeowners' association for three years. His service within the Acoustical Society of America includes representing biomedical acoustics at Technical Program Organizing Meetings in 2011 and serving on both the biomedical acoustics committee from 2010 to 2013 and the physical acoustics committee from 2011 to 2014. In academia, he coordinated the Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at the University of Washington, Engineered Biomaterials, in 1997.
Dr. Mitchell's scholarly output includes several influential publications such as "Characterizing an Agar/Gelatin Phantom For Image Guided Dosing and Feedback Control Of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound" published in Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology in 2013; "Novel High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Clamp - Potential Adjunct for Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy" published by Journal of Endourology in 2012; and "Pre-clinical in vivo evaluation of an extracorporeal HIFU device for ablation of pancreatic tumors" published by Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology in 2009.
Born in Seattle, Dr. Mitchell continues to look ahead, with the aspiration that Novuson's technology will become a global standard, transforming surgical practice worldwide through its superior safety profile and benefits for surgeons. While he envisions eventually stepping back from day-to-day operations, he remains dedicated to advancing technology and contributing to new developments in his field.
