Dr. Przeklasa has established a distinguished career in education, marked by his broad and deep experience in teaching and providing leadership from elementary education, to high school education, to university education and through the doctoral dissertation phase.
Since 2014 he has held the title of professor emeritus of educational leadership from Concordia University Chicago; this follows a decade as a highly regarded full-time professor from 2004 to 2014. Dr. Przeklasa taught courses at the master's and doctoral levels focusing on administration and policy, the superintendency, educational leadership, school law, educational finance, and collective bargaining. His tenure at this institution was characterized by his dedication to preparing educators and administrators as advocates for students, and that they themselves, should strive to be life long learners. Dr. Przeklasa was the Concordia University Commencement Speaker in 2012 and 2023.
Prior to his academic appointment at Concordia University Chicago, Dr. Przeklasa served as a school superintendent for two decades in five Illinois School Districts from 1983 to 2003: Keeneyville School District in DuPage County; Union School District in Will County; Grass Lake School District in Lake County; Milton Pope School in LaSalle County; and Cherry School District in Bureau County.
During his time as school superintendent, Dr. Przeklasa became particularly proud of his ability to guide districts facing significant financial and instructional challenges toward stability and improvement. He played a pivotal role in implementing strategic planning initiatives that set clear direction for schools and fostered positive change in both fiscal management and instructional quality. His expertise in school board development, organizational development and strategic planning was instrumental in these achievements.
From 1979 to 1983, Dr. Przeklasa contributed as assistant regional superintendent of schools in Cook County, Illinois, where he engaged with local superintendents, principals and teachers while annually visiting over 80 schools. Prior to this, he began his professional journey as a social studies teacher at Argo Community High School in Summit Illinois, where he taught from 1969 to 1979. His early experiences in the classroom shaped his understanding of student needs and reinforced his commitment to fostering environments where both students and educators could thrive.
Throughout his career, Dr Przeklasa has been recognized as an expert in strategic planning and organizations, school board development, administrator and teacher development, non-profit organizational development, and social justice. His professional affiliations also reflect his leadership within the field of education. He is a member of the American Association of School Administrators and Illinois Association of School Administrators, both school superintendent associations. Since beginning graduate school, Dr. Przeklasa has kept his membership in the professional educational fraternity Phi Delta Kappa. Additionally he is past president of the Lyons Township Mental Health Commission where he served for six years and is past chair of the DuPage County Region of the American Cancer Society, serving on its leadership board for sixteen years. For seven years Dr. Przeklasa was on the peer review committee for psychological, social, behavioral and disparities research grants for the Illinois American Cancer Society.
Dr. Przeklasa's academic background provided a strong foundation for his professional accomplishments, culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy in administration and policy studies from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He also holds a master's degree in urban education from Chicago State University, as well as both a master's and a bachelor's degree in sociology from Northern Illinois University.
When reflecting on his career, Dr. Przeklasa realizes that the values instilled in him during his upbringing in the Chicago suburb of Berwyn, Illinois. The values emphasizing social justice and service to others, have been central to his approach throughout his journey. As an Eagle Scout and inspired by his own teachers who demonstrated the transformative power of education, he has consistently sought opportunities to give back to society through teaching, mentoring and leadership.
Dr. Przeklasa's personal life is rooted in the Chicago west suburban area, where he was born. His wife, Helen, was a second grade teacher for more than 30 years in LaGrange IL., followed by her university supervision and mentoring of student teachers. She is engaged as a volunteer in several social service organizations including Catholic Charities and the League of Women Voters.
Dr. Przeklasa practices what he teaches about life long learning and development. He keeps a weekly routine of ballroom and Latin dance with a professional, fitness training, engagement with a Spanish tutor, and extensive reading in current affairs, the social sciences, health and novels. A lifelong advocate of helping others, Dr. Przeklasa remains dedicated to supporting young professionals and students. He recently mentored an individual pursuing a doctorate in psychology in Mexico, providing guidance in navigating the educational system and determining the path for career growth. He believes strongly in the importance of lifelong learning and mentoring as essential components of personal and professional growth.
