Discuss a significant challenge you anticipate facing in your medical career—whether systemic, clinical, or ethical—and articulate how you plan to integrate Dr. Charasika's principles of innovation, equity, and patient-centeredness to navigate it and improve patient outcomes."
The winner will receive a one-time award of $1,000 to support their educational endeavors. The application deadline is August 15, 2026, with the recipient set to be announced on September 15, 2026.
Dr. James Charasika's legacy in the medical community is distinguished by a combination of clinical excellence and visionary leadership. As the first Black physician recruited to the University of Louisville's Department of Family Practice and later appointed Chief Resident, Dr. Charasika broke barriers while setting new standards for primary care. He went on to establish the Louisville Primary Care Center, P.S.C., and the Louisville Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), one of Kentucky's first NCQA-certified practices, emphasizing preventive care and holistic patient advocacy.
Beyond his clinical achievements, Dr. James Charasika has consistently prioritized mentorship, serving as a Clinical Instructor and precepting countless medical students, residents, and nurse practitioners. His dedication to fostering a new generation of healthcare professionals underscores the mission of the Dr. James Charasika Scholarship for Medical Students: to support aspiring doctors who share a commitment to improving patient outcomes through compassion, innovation, and integrity.
The scholarship is designed to identify and reward students who demonstrate not only academic excellence but also a dedication to the principles that have defined Dr. Charasika's career.
