BETHESDA, MD, March 28, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In today's complex society, the need for human rights education has never been more urgent. High-profile criminal cases such as Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell's sexual abuse and trafficking operation dominate headlines and show the need to educate youth early so they can better protect themselves against human rights abuses before they start. These cases have pointed out that globally there are patterns of exploitation and abuse which continue largely due to lack of awareness, education and prevention at the level of the individual in society.

According to the United Nations Labour Organization, "there are an estimated 27.6 million human trafficking victims worldwide" (www.dhs.gov/human-trafficking-quick-facts ). Human trafficking remains one of the most profitable criminal industries today generating an estimated 150 billion dollars worldwide per year (www.state.gov/the-role-of-the-financial-sector-promising-practices-in-the-eradication-of-trafficking-in-persons). At the same time, other human rights challenges continue to escalate with religious and political conflicts contributing to displacement, instability and vulnerability. Over 117 million people are forcibly displaced by conflict and violence. This equates to one in every 70 people on Earth. (www.unhcr.org/mid-year-trends). Around the world, millions are denied basic rights like education with 272 million children currently not schooled, which limits their ability to know and defend their own rights. (www.unesco.org/en/articles/countries-commit-reducing-number-out-school-children-165-million)

This is where human rights education becomes essential. Education is the way to empower individuals with the knowledge to recognize abuse of themselves and others, and stand up against these abuses. Without education, the cycles of exploitation and discrimination continue unchecked.

Understanding this, the Youth for Human Rights DC Chapter went out to make a difference in their local community. Aligned with Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich's stated priorities on youth and families, the volunteers went to Cabin John Regional Park during one of Montgomery Park's free outdoor concerts to hand out informational booklets promoting human rights. The volunteers spoke a member of the performing jazz ensemble the Eric Byrd Trio, about the Youth for Human Rights program, who agreed that this is a needed program in the community.

"Just as music brings people together, human rights unite us all. But few people know all of their 30 human rights, so we are here to teach them," explained Azhar Haq, Executive Director, Youth for Human Rights DC.

The purpose of Youth for Human Rights DC is to teach youth about human rights, specifically the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and inspire them to become valuable advocates for tolerance and peace.

Human rights defender, L. Ron Hubbard said: "Human Rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream." The Youth for Human Rights DC team is working toward making human rights a fact, starting with their local area. Their presence serves as a reminder that while global statistics may seem overwhelming, change can begin locally, with education and conversations by any person who wants to make a difference in their community.

This year, Youth for Human Rights International celebrates 25 years of global impact. It is a nonprofit organization with chapters around the world and a mission to teach youth the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Thanks to the support of the Church of Scientology, Youth for Human Rights International's award-winning educational materials, including booklets and videos, are provided free of charge to anyone wishing to take action to make human rights a fact.
