Marked by progressive leadership roles and a commitment to operational excellence, Mr. Backman has led a distinguished career in the construction and materials industry with a focus on financial strategies, resource management and continuous improvement across multiple operating entities. Since 2025, he has served as both managing director and member of Hanabury Built Pavements LLC in Marshfield, Massachusetts. Playing a key role in its' acquisition, as well as guiding the company's long-term strategic direction, he leverages his expertise in cultural development and innovation to create robust processes that drive efficiency and growth.
Additionally, since 2023, Mr. Backman has held the position of managing director and member at JGB Recycled Aggregate Materials LLC, also based in Marshfield. Dedicated to maintaining sustainable practices within the construction industry, he oversees operations that prioritize environmental responsibility while maintaining the highest standards of quality and service.
Mr. Backman's tenure as chief operations officer and treasurer at Mass Pavement Reclamation Inc., which began in 2016, further underscores his operational acumen. In these dual roles, he has managed complex projects, streamlined business processes and ensured financial stewardship, contributing significantly to the company's reputation for reliability and innovation.
Prior to his corporate achievements, Mr. Backman served on active duty the United States Marine Corps as well as the MA Air National Guard, where he again served on active duty following the events of 09/11. His decision to join the military, which was inspired by his family's history of entering the service after graduating from high school, most notably his father's, instilled in him a strong sense of discipline, resilience and leadership — qualities that continue to influence his approach to management and team development today. Mr. Backman is also a certified paramedic and served as a part-time EMS provider for nearly two decades, emphasizing his commitment to the service and well-being of others. Mr. Backman continues his service to others in his role as a sponsor, donor, and board member of a MA based, 501(c)(3) organization focused on the awareness and prevention of veteran suicide.
Alongside his primary roles, Mr. Backman is an active member of the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association and the Construction Financial Management Association, reflecting his dedication to staying informed on the latest industry trends and best practices.
Hailing from an equally accomplished educational background, Mr. Backman earned an Executive Master of Business Administration from the University of East London in 2026, graduating with Distinction. As with his military service, his academic pursuits were inspired by family legacy; his grandfather immigrated to the United States from Sweden in the 1930s and contributed to shipbuilding efforts in Quincy. Notably, his uncle Carl achieved a doctorate, authored mathematics textbooks that were used in schools nationwide, and served as associate vice president within the University of West Florida school system before retiring.
Among Mr. Backman's most significant personal milestones is the strength he displayed at age 16 when he assumed responsibility for supporting his mother and brother during a deeply challenging period for his family following the sudden passing of his father at age 45. This formative experience shaped his character and instilled a belief that perseverance can overcome adversity.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Backman draws inspiration from reading. He recently completed the acclaimed 2024 book "Say It Well" which was written by his childhood friend Terry Szuplat, who served as a speechwriter for President Barack Obama for eight years before becoming a prominent speaker. At a recent book signing event, Mr. Szuplat recounted their shared upbringing and discussed overcoming his own self-doubt — a narrative that resonated deeply with Mr. Backman, who values public speaking and engaging with diverse audiences.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Backman remains committed to both personal growth and professional development and is seeking admission to Doctor of Business Administration programs commencing Fall 2026. Mr. Backman's future professional aspirations include plans to share his knowledge with others through academia and consulting, which he plans to conduct with his wife Jennifer. Driven by the desire to help others through everything he does, Mr. Backman continues the study of neuroscience driven leadership studies and emotional intelligence and seeks new opportunities for speaking engagements focusing on resilience, mindset transformation, and growth.
