GREAT NECK, NY, April 03, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Shabina M. Hussain, MD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Marked by more than two decades of outstanding contributions to the health care sector, Dr. Hussain has established herself as a distinguished figure in anesthesiology, artificial intelligence-driven clinical research, machine learning and medical informatics. Since 2023, she has served as an assistant professor in the anesthesia department at Northwell Health, where she provides anesthesia care to patients in the operating room and manages general surgical, urologic, gynecologic, electrophysiology and endoscopy procedures. Her responsibilities also include supporting surgeries in both hospital and ambulatory center settings while balancing her clinical duties with project development and strategic initiatives on non-operating days.
Dr. Hussain's association with Northwell Health began in 2007 when she joined North Shore University Hospital. For many years, the facility's anesthesia department operated as a private practice under North American Partners in Anesthesia. She contributed as an anesthesiologist from 2007 to 2022, providing high-quality patient care and participating in departmental advancements. In 2023, following Northwell Health's acquisition of her department, she was appointed as assistant professor — a role that marked her return to academic research and innovation.
Alongside her clinical endeavors, Dr. Hussain co-founded Aniba Health Solutions, LLC in 2016, where she continues to serve as chief executive officer. Through this venture, she has been pivotal in the patenting and prototyping of the Elliptica Oxygen Mask, holding patents for this innovative device since 2016 and securing a European patent in 2022. Her leadership has guided the product from concept to clinical introduction, reflecting her longstanding commitment to advancing patient care through continued technological innovation.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Hussain was a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Queens from 2004 to 2007. Prior to this role, she gained her initial clinical experience as an assistant professor of cardiothoracic anesthesia at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Campus from 1999 to 2004.
During this period, Dr. Hussain achieved a significant milestone by developing a menu-driven website for the Columbia-Presbyterian Department of Anesthesiology in 2001— a pioneering effort at a time when such platforms were rare outside of the banking industry. This innovative resource provided anesthesiologists, medical students, patients, families and communities with comprehensive information about the department and set a new standard for academic websites in anesthesiology.
Dr. Hussain's journey into anesthesiology began with her residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. Following her residency, she pursued a National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health fellowship from 1997 to 1999, during which she focused on extramural medical informatics while simultaneously completing a cardiac anesthesiology fellowship and pursuing a master's degree in medical informatics at Columbia University. She also obtained a Doctor of Medicine from Buffalo State University in 1993 and holds a bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences from The City University of New York, awarded in 1991. This foundation has been vital as she continues to engage in academic projects, including recent research collaborations with the directors of lung transplant at Northwell and MDC Studio. She has secured initial funding for this project from the North Shore University Hospital Medical Staff Society.
Throughout her career, Dr. Hussain has demonstrated a passion for innovation, balancing years of dedicated patient care with groundbreaking projects and leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve clinical care in the ever-evolving field of medicine. In 2026, she presented her Elliptical Oxygen Mask at the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Advance conference, underscoring her influence within the field.
Reflecting on her storied journey thus far, Dr. Hussain notes that her success is rooted not only in rigorous academic training but also in formative personal experiences — including undergoing heart surgery as a child — which inspired her pursuit of medicine and research. Likewise, growing up in New York City provided her with access to supportive schools and mentors who encouraged her ambitions from middle school through to her residency and fellowship. She credits much of her progress to having a network of guidance and encouragement.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Hussain is civically engaged through service on the medical school admissions committee at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University/Northwell Health. She also previously served on the board of the University Gardens Property Owners Association.
As a balance to her career commitments, Dr. Hussain maintains an active lifestyle through hobbies such as traveling, playing tennis, cooking and gardening. Happily married and a devoted family woman, she is the proud mother of three children; her eldest works at Microsoft, another is in medical school, and her youngest is a sophomore in high school as of 2026.
In the coming years, Dr. Hussain aims to achieve the widespread adoption of her innovations — particularly the Elliptica Oxygen Mask — in clinical settings to enhance patient care. She envisions realizing the potential of her ongoing clinical research using technological advancements such as machine learning, thus broadening her impact by incorporating virtual reality techniques to further improve patient outcomes around the world.
