HAUPPAUGE, NY, April 16, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John T. Powers Jr., Esq., has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Powers has established a distinguished career in criminal defense and family law, serving as the owner and managing attorney of Powers Law P.C. since 2002. Over more than 20 years, he has built a reputation for expertise in criminal defense, handling complex cases throughout New York State. His responsibilities encompass attending court proceedings, managing cases involving driving while intoxicated and sex abuse allegations, conferencing with clients and stakeholders, conducting client meetings, providing legal counsel, performing motion practice and preparing legal filings. He also reviews extensive discovery materials like police body camera footage and oversees case strategy from intake through resolution. Additionally, Mr. Powers supervises firm operations and guides associates handling family law matters, including divorce, custody disputes and orders of protection.
Prior to founding his own practice, Mr. Powers worked alongside attorney Joseph Caramagno from 1998 to 2002. During this formative period, he gained valuable experience before ultimately acquiring Mr. Caramagno's practice. Throughout his career, Mr. Powers has demonstrated a commitment to professional development by delivering voluntary lectures on discovery laws, driving while intoxicated defense strategies, jury selection and effective courtroom advocacy.
Mr. Powers's approach to legal practice is deeply influenced by his early work experiences in public-facing roles such as gas station attendant, serving ice cream, bartending and retail loss prevention. These positions taught him the importance of connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds—a skill that has proven essential in building relationships with judges, prosecutors, clients and court personnel—and fostering empathy and understanding.
Among Mr. Powers's most notable achievements is his participation in a significant homicide case where he successfully challenged the highest charge facing his client—a charge that could have resulted in a 20-year sentence—despite an unfavorable outcome on a lesser count. He takes particular pride in cases where diligent investigation and negotiation have allowed clients to avoid trial altogether. For example, after investing approximately 100 hours reviewing evidence in a case involving 50 counts of animal cruelty, he persuaded the prosecutor to a dismissal—ultimately sparing his client from incarceration and leaving her without any criminal record.
Mr. Powers is recognized for his leadership within the legal community. He served as president of the Suffolk County Criminal Bar Association in 2023 and maintains active membership in the Knights of Columbus, the Brehon Law Society of Nassau County, the Brehon Law Society of Suffolk County and the National College for DUI Defense, among others. He also contributes to the Criminal Law Committees of the Suffolk County Bar Association.
Academically, Mr. Powers's background includes earning a Juris Doctor from Touro Law School in 1997 and a bachelor's degree from Adelphi University in 1994. He has been admitted to practice law in New York State since 1998, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Beyond his formal training, he attributes much of his success to hard work and continuous learning, qualities exemplified by his dedication to staying current with evolving case law and statutory changes following major reforms to New York's discovery and bail reform laws.
Mr. Powers's decision to pursue a legal career was shaped by the encouragement of his parents—particularly a pivotal conversation with his father during college—which inspired him to choose law over a corporate retail path at Macy's Federated department store.
Beyond his professional commitments, Mr. Powers is civically engaged as a continuing legal education speaker on criminal law updates and trial skills, as well as program coordinator for New York State criminal law updates. His service extends to board membership with The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick on Long Island, where he previously served as president.
Born in Manhattan, Mr. Powers is devoted to his family life as a father of three children who are actively pursuing their interests—his son shares his passion for golf, while both daughters excel at volleyball, with one beginning to explore golf as well. Mr. Powers enjoys golfing, freshwater fishing and attending his children's athletic events in his free time.
Mr. Powers has witnessed significant changes in the legal field, particularly in discovery practices and the growing reliance on digital evidence. Following New York State's 2020 reform requiring prosecutors to provide all discovery materials within 90 days of arraignment, defense attorneys must now review substantially larger volumes of information in a condensed timeframe. Although this shift has increased the workload—often requiring extensive analysis of materials such as hours of body-worn camera footage—it allows for more comprehensive case preparation. As a result, attorneys can better collaborate with clients, develop informed trial strategies earlier and ultimately achieve more favorable outcomes.
Looking ahead, Mr. Powers remains committed to ensuring that his firm adapts effectively to technological advancements within the legal field while maintaining its reputation for credibility among peers and within the court system. He prioritizes direct communication with clients through innovative scheduling systems and dedicated portals that keep clients informed about their cases—demonstrating an unwavering dedication to diligence, availability and trustworthiness in all professional interactions.
