DETROIT, MI, April 16, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As concerns grow around adolescent mental health, new insights from Dr. Shantalea Johns, Ed.D., LMSW, highlight a troubling reality. Many young people are navigating social isolation and loneliness while turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as vaping, excessive social media use and emotional withdrawal.
According to Dr. Johns, a professor, mental health educator, speaker and licensed therapist, these behaviors are not random. They are responses to overwhelming environments and unmet emotional needs. "We have to stop asking what is wrong with young people and start asking what has happened to them," she explains.
The World Health Organization reports that half of all mental health conditions start before age 14, but most go unnoticed and unsupported.
Adolescence is a critical period for identity development, emotional regulation and relationship building. Without strong support systems, many teens seek quick relief from stress and anxiety. Research shows that nearly one in three high school students report current e-cigarette use, often as a way to cope with mental health challenges they do not know how to manage.
At the same time, social media can intensify feelings of loneliness. While it offers connection, it can also expose young people to constant comparison, fear of missing out, and pressure to perform, all of which can erode self-esteem and deepen isolation.
Dr. Johns encourages families and communities to take a proactive, supportive approach. Her recommendations include:
Create space for conversation: Encourage open, judgment-free discussions about stress, friendships and online experiences.
Strengthen real-life connections: Prioritize family time, shared meals and activities that build belonging.
Teach healthy coping skills: Introduce journaling, creative outlets and mindfulness practices like deep breathing.
Set healthy digital boundaries: Establish phone-free times and help teens understand how social media impacts their emotions.
"Connection is one of the most powerful protective factors we have," says Dr. Johns. "A single caring adult can change the trajectory of a young person's life."
As communities recognize the growing impact of loneliness and unhealthy coping among youth, Dr. Johns emphasizes that solutions must involve families, schools and communities working together to ensure young people feel seen, supported and never alone.
With nearly 20 years of experience in community mental health and higher education, Dr. Shantalea Johns helps clients create personalized wellness plans that support lifelong resilience.
