Dr. Patterson's professional journey began after earning a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alberta in Canada in 1967. Following the advice of his father and grandfather, he began in general practice, serving communities along the Alaska Highway near Fort St. John, before transitioning to laboratory medicine around 1973. He initially intended to return as a pathologist to underserved areas but instead spent approximately two decades working in hospital pathology departments. Later, he specialized in locum tenens assignments, traveling extensively to provide coverage for physicians and pathologists on leave. This experience honed his adaptability and reinforced his commitment to ensuring continuity of care for patients and facilities alike.

In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Patterson holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Calgary in Canada, earned in 1987. His academic background also includes a Bachelor of Science degree. The combination of clinical expertise and business acumen has enabled him to navigate complex operational challenges and contribute meaningfully to organizational growth.

Dr. Patterson attributes much of his success to his ability to truly listen, an approach that distinguishes him from others who may wait their turn to speak. Born in Ontario, Dr. Patterson enjoys writing as a personal pursuit outside of his professional responsibilities.

Looking ahead, Dr. Patterson aims to complete the Irvine laboratory project—a state-of-the-art facility featuring advanced automation—and establish it as a reference center for smaller laboratories across Orange County through a new business line developed with key colleagues.

Dr. Patterson takes pride in his family's accomplishments as well. His son pursued applications at Edmonton and Calgary but ultimately became a lawyer with an additional Master of Business Administration degree. Now working as a consultant on major software projects for leading firms, Dr. Patterson admires his son's expertise and impact within that field.
