Earlier in his career, he worked as a measurement and control technician at Southwest Gas Corporation from 1993 to 2005, gaining valuable experience in technical operations.
Throughout his career, Mr. Layton has been recognized as an expert in career and technical education welding instruction. He is an active member of the American Welding Society and Associated Builders and Contractors Inc., reflecting his ongoing commitment to professional development and industry standards.
Mr. Layton's educational background has played a pivotal role in shaping his multifaceted career. He earned an Associate of Applied Science in code welding from Austin Community College in 2020, completing this degree through a dual-credit program while simultaneously teaching during the day and attending evening classes.
Additionally, Mr. Layton holds a Bachelor of Science in agriculture technology, management and education from The University of Arizona, graduating in 2011 after being named to the Dean's List for academic excellence. His academic journey began with an Associate of Arts in general studies from Pima Community College in 2008.
Complementing his formal education, Mr. Layton's credentials include OSHA-10 certification from CareerSafe LLC, earned in 2019; certification in agriculture, food and natural resources from the Texas Education Agency, earned in 2017; a certified HACCP auditor designation from The University of Arizona; and certification as a diesel mechanic. He is also skilled in teaching business courses and is widely regarded as a jack-of-all-trades, demonstrating versatility and depth across multiple disciplines.
Mr. Layton's early influences stem from growing up in Seattle within a family-owned meat market in Ellensburg WA, where he developed foundational knowledge of food production and business operations. His diverse work history includes experience as a certified diesel mechanic, construction framer, machinist and employment in a hospital setting, where he contributed to emergency room sanitation and support in the psychiatric ward.
Outside his professional pursuits, Mr. Layton is dedicated to his family life as a husband and the father of two daughters. Looking ahead, he aims to identify a successor capable of continuing his legacy of providing transformative educational opportunities for students at Texas School for the Deaf. He also plans to focus on promoting good nutrition and expanding his culinary interests following retirement.
