Founded by James Charasika, the scholarship reflects a continued commitment to advancing patient-centered medicine, preventive care, and equitable healthcare leadership for future generations.
The scholarship is open to undergraduate students currently enrolled at accredited colleges and universities who are pursuing a demonstrated pre-medical academic track, including majors in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related fields. Through this initiative, James Charasika seeks to recognize students who exhibit strong academic performance while demonstrating a thoughtful understanding of the evolving challenges facing modern healthcare systems.
The Dr. James Charasika Scholarship for Medical Students awards a one-time scholarship of $1,000 to a qualifying student whose essay submission best reflects the values of innovation, equity, and patient-centered healthcare that define Dr. James Charasika's professional legacy.
Applicants are required to submit a substantive essay responding to a prompt inspired by Dr. James Charasika's decades-long career in medicine and advocacy. The essay asks students to identify a significant systemic, clinical, or ethical challenge they anticipate facing in their future medical careers and explain how they plan to apply principles of innovation, equity, and holistic patient care to improve outcomes for patients and communities.
James Charasika's career continues to serve as the foundation for the scholarship's mission. Originally from Mutare, Zimbabwe, Dr. James Charasika graduates from Meharry Medical College, where he ranks fifth in his graduating class before embarking on a distinguished 40-year medical career in the United States. As the first Black physician recruited to the University of Louisville's Department of Family Practice and later its Chief Resident, Dr. James Charasika helps reshape opportunities within academic medicine while advancing patient-focused healthcare delivery models.
Throughout his career, James Charasika remains committed to transforming healthcare from a reactive "sick care" approach into a preventive and proactive system centered on long-term patient wellness. His leadership includes establishing the Louisville Primary Care Center, P.S.C., and founding the Louisville Patient-Centered Medical Home, one of the first Kentucky practices to earn certification from the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
Beyond clinical leadership, James Charasika, M.D. dedicates significant time to mentoring medical students, residents, and nurse practitioners. The scholarship initiative continues this commitment by encouraging future healthcare professionals to think critically about ethical leadership, access to care, and healthcare innovation before entering medical school.
The application deadline for the scholarship is August 15, 2026. The scholarship recipient will be officially announced on September 15, 2026.
