Prof. Bhattacharjee has established and enjoyed a distinguished academic and scientific career spanning over 37 years, dedicated to algal, agricultural and environmental biotechnology. Since 2014, she has served as a Research Professor, Visiting Academic, Department of Biosciences Rice University, and as an independent consultant 2021 onwards in Houston. In this role, she leads pioneering innovative research in algal biotechnology, focusing on wastewater treatment, agricultural crop improvement with biofertilizer and biostimulant treatment, biofuel production bio active compounds from algae with pharmaceutical value, and extremophillic algae and their uses. Her longstanding expertise has established her as a leader in her field, and her ongoing work continues to tackle significant environmental issues and challenges.

Prof. Bhattacharjee's focus on cyanobacteria distinguishes her from her peers, as she has dedicated over three decades of her career to this research. This continuity has enabled her to build a comprehensive knowledge base. Her innovative work has extended to oilfield bioremediation, where she has developed methods using algae to treat fracking wastewater, improving crop yield with algal biofertilizers and biostimulants, biofuel production using algae growing on municipal wastes, bioremediation of highly polluted environments with algal applications etc. Likewise, as an educator and mentor, Prof. Bhattacharjee has supervised 25 doctoral students focused on cyanobacteria applications, over 300 master's Dissertations and some gifted and talented school students. She has prioritized empowering women through education and considers mentoring only aspiring women scientists among her greatest achievements.

As a renowned scientist, Prof. Bhattacharjee's prolific contributions have been published in renowned peer-reviewed journals. She has authored over 255 research papers and served as an ad hoc reviewer for 62 journals. Additionally, she has contributed two books and 13 book chapters, as well as written articles for local Indo-American newspapers and magazines, such as Outlook by the Bay. Among other accomplishments, Prof. Bhattacharjee was featured as the 12th profile in "Lilavati's Daughters" featuring 100 top women scientists in India by the Indian Academy of Sciences and was a platinum jubilee speaker at the National Academy of Sciences, India, for more than 10 years. She has been featured on the cover page of LifeScience Magazine as Pioneering leader driving innovation and growth in Biotech industry and in Entrepreneurial Outlook magazine as the most inspiring woman educationalist. Earlier in her career, Prof. Bhattacharjee served as a faculty fellow in the Department of Biosciences at Rice University for two years and then as Research Professor/Visiting Academic till date. Prior to this tenure, she held various roles at Barkatullah University (formerly Bhopal University) in India. From 2005 to 2014, she served as Professor and Department Head and Dean Faculty of Life Science leading academic and research endeavors. Her leadership significantly advanced departmental academics and research and created a supportive environment for innovation and scholarly success. She began her academic career on campus in 1989 as a Lecturer, Reader and then became a full ranking Professor. Additionally, she spent 10 years as a visiting faculty member across several departments, including microbiology, biotechnology, limnology and pharmacy.

Concurrently, in 2007, Prof. Bhattacharjee served as an Overseas Associate of the Department of Biotechnology at the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Oregon, Eugene USA, broadening her international outlook on biotechnological research. Between 1998 and 1999, she held a Commonwealth Fellowship in Biotechnology and served as a Visiting Faculty member at Durham University and at the British Antarctic Survey at Cambridge University. 1994-1995 she was a Visiting Faculty on the DAAD fellowship at the Friedrich Alexander Universitat Nuremberg Germany. Additionally, serving as a freelance consultant and advisor, she provides expertise to major corporations on environmental biotech initiatives. Notably, she helps a Utah-based oil company address complex water-treatment challenges by applying innovative algal solutions, thereby significantly improving water quality. Also, she is helping a company design granule for shingles for roof tops to prevent algae from growing on them.

Prof. Bhattacharjee's educational background laid a strong foundation for her scientific pursuits. Highly educated, Prof. Bhattacharjee first earned a Bachelor of Science in plant science, with honors, at the Banaras Hindu University and went on to earn a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in plant sciences from the same University. After obtaining her doctoral degree, she continued to expand her knowledge through additional certifications, including course certificates in Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economics from Harvard Business School, in Algal Biotechnology from the University of California San Diego, and in World Environmental Management from the Technical University of Denmark.

Prof. Bhattacharjee is a fellow of the Academy of Environmental Biology, the National Environmental Science Academy, the International Consortium of Contemporary Biologists, the Horticultural Society of India and the American Society of Plant Biology. Life member of Phycological Society of America, American Association for Microbiologists, National Academy of Sciences, the Indian Science Congress, the International Society of Applied Biology and the Indian Botanical Society, and serves as both a life member and vice president of the Society for the Promotion of Plant Science Research. Among other affiliations, Prof. Bhattacharjee is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Indo-American Society and the Association for Women in Science USA.

Celebrating a career of triumphs and field contributions, Prof. Bhattacharjee was named one of 20 finalists for innovative research at the World Oil Awards in 2017, an honor recognizing her impact on returning fluids and on cleaning oil wells, despite it being outside her primary area of expertise. She was also nominated to the Top 50 Women Leaders of Houston in 2023 for outstanding achievements in environmental biotechnology. The recipient of numerous awards – including approximately 25 honors during her career in India – Prof. Bhattacharjee earned a Nobel Academician Award from Scientific Laurels in 2026, The JC Bose award for outstanding academician 2025,The international Scientific Award for Lifetime achievements 2024. International Perficio Award from UPACRI in 2022, an International Scientist Award from the INSO Awards in 2021, a Dr. Kailashnath Katju National Award for Life Sciences from the Government of India in 2013 and an Ojaswini Award in 2011, among a myriad of other accolades.

Prof. Bhattacharjee attributes much of her success to resilience, perseverance and her husband and family's unwavering support. She also credits her parents' encouragement for inspiring her during moments when societal expectations hindered women's academic progress. Looking ahead, she is dedicated to promoting sustainability through ongoing research on fish feed alternatives, biofertilizers and bio-stimulant, increased crop productivity and renewable energy, with the goal of reducing pollution and safeguarding ecosystems worldwide.
