SARATOGA, CA, May 28, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- MAki Fujimura has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Renowned for his decades of work in shaping the semiconductor industry through a series of transformative roles and innovations, Mr. Fujimura has established himself as a leading expert in electronic design automation and guiding software companies toward long-term success. As co-founder of the eBeam Initiative, which was established in 2009, he has played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and sharing a common vision.
Mr. Fujimura founded D2S Inc. in 2007 and has been its chairman and chief executive officer since, where his visionary leadership has driven significant advancements in graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration software for semiconductor manufacturing. Recognizing the potential of this technology well ahead of his industry peers, he has propelled computational design forward, cementing his longstanding reputation as an innovator.
In addition to his primary career, Mr. Fujimura became the owner of the Saratoga, California-based fine dining establishment Plumed Horse in 2006. After an extensive remodel in 2007, the Californian Cuisine restaurant regained the Wine Spectator Grand Award and has been awarded every year since. In 2025, only 97 restaurants in the world were awarded the honor. The restaurant earned its Michelin Star in 2008 and has been awarded the star every year since. He enjoys hosting the annual eBeam Initiative Luminaries' dinner there in February.
From 2006 to 2014, Mr. Fujimura contributed as the board director of Coverity, providing strategic guidance during a period of growth and innovation in software quality and security solutions. Coverity was acquired by Synopsys in 2014.
Prior to founding D2S, he was chief technology officer for new business incubations at Cadence Design Systems, where he led initiatives to identify and develop emerging software technologies within electronic design automation. He got to Cadence for his second tenure through the acquisition of Simplex Solutions Inc. where he was president and chief operating officer from 1997 to 2002. He played a key role in developing the X architecture for integrated circuit design, working with Steve Teig and Tom Kronmiller.
Mr. Fujimura also served as a board member at Bristol Technology from 1996 to 2007, supporting the company's efforts in enterprise software solutions. Bristol was acquired by HP in 2007.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Fujimura served as vice president and inside board member at Pure Software from 1993 to 1997, guiding the company through critical phases of development in software tools for software quality. From 1989 to 1993, he served in various positions leading to vice president and general manager of central engineering at Cadence Design Systems, overhauling the overall integration scheme for Cadence's EDA suite away from a central database and user interface framework for all applications, preferring to emphasize product quality and continued pace of innovation and Cadence's acquisition-based growth strategy.
Mr. Fujimura's tenure, starting as a member of technical staff, finishing as vice president of engineering at Tangent Design Systems — along with ECAD, SDA, and Gateway, the founding core of what became Cadence Design Systems — from 1984 to 1989 marked a defining period in his career. Together with Steve Teig, they led the development of Tangate, an over-the-cell automated placement and routing system that revolutionized automated physical design for fully synchronous design methodology — an approach that remains the industry standard four decades later.
The 1980s were when "software patents" (patents intended to cover software inventions) started to be granted. Tangent did not file any patents for the innovations embedded in Tangate. But a number of its innovations still live on today, including "ECO" engineering change order. Mr. Fujimura is the original author of the DEF and LEF format specifications implemented by Tom Kronmiller that later became an industry standard under Si2 (Silicon Integration Initiative). Interestingly, the Manhattan routing assumptions that he embraced to make Tangate more efficient are exactly what he is trying to undo at D2S with his vision for curvilinear, manufacturable shapes.
Alongside his entrepreneurial roles, Mr. Fujimura continues to expand his impact through affiliations with several major professional organizations. He is serving a two-year term as president of BACUS, the premier photomask manufacturing community that is a technical working group of SPIE, since 2024. He also participates on the executive committee of the Electronic System Design Alliance. He is a fellow of SPIE.
Mr. Fujimura earned both a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and computer science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1982. Moving to the United States at age 13 when his father accepted a position at Bell Labs proved pivotal, with his subsequent exposure to advanced research environments shaping his interest in technology early on. His home-stay experience in 1972-73 with the Mathews family (Max, Marj, Vernon, Guy, and Boyd) shaped the rest of his life. Likewise, a sophomore summer co-op assignment at Honeywell with Andre Gold and Howard Schutzman introduced him serendipitously to electronic design automation, the field that would become his lifelong passion.
Reflecting on his storied journey to date, Mr. Fujimura attributes his success to the support of his parents as well as his rigorous education and the fortuitous opportunities he has encountered throughout his journey. He is also grateful to have had mentors such as Professor Barbara Liskov, Lance Glasser, Joe Costello and the late Professor Richard Newton, all of whom provided him with invaluable advice and encouragement. He is particularly thankful for teamwork and collaboration with Steve Teig, Tom Kronmiller and James Fong over five decades and five companies.
Happily married to his wife Sally and a proud father of Emi and Taddy, who are studying at New York University and Harker School, respectively, Mr. Fujimura cherishes his family life and enjoys spending time together with their cat Snowball. Also known for his creative pursuits, he has composed pieces of light jazz piano music throughout the years, with some of his works available on YouTube for global audiences to enjoy. He holds precious his time with Andy Cheng that he loves as his son.
Outside of his professional commitments, Mr. Fujimura takes pride in the Plumed Horse and La Fondue across the street and appreciates exploring fine foods and wines. He enjoys golf with friends and family, and often finds life and work parallels in golf. He enjoys teaching the short game and enjoys helping with eGolf.ai, a golf watch app started by Emi.
Professionally, he is determined to further his technological impact in the coming years. He is focused on evangelizing curvilinear, manufacturable designs for semiconductor chips. He has no plans to retire, as he feels he hasn't worked a day in his life. He got that from his Dad, nature and nurture.
