Marked by more than 26 years of experience in leadership roles throughout the engineering sector, Mr. Barber currently serves as the director of engineering at Highgate, a prominent hospitality and real estate organization with a portfolio of hotels throughout North America, Latin America and Europe. In his capacity, he sits on both the advisory commissioning board and the engineering council, providing guidance to engineers and helping them stay aware of local laws, compliance regulations and sustainability initiatives. He is also responsible for capital expenditure projects, vendor relations for both short- and long-term projects, full property renovations and retrofitting through various programs.

Prior to joining Highgate, Mr. Barber excelled as chief engineer in a mechanical engineering role with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 94 New York, NY location. In this position from 2018 to 2025, he managed complex engineering processes such as cooling tower operations, water treatment and emergency generators and contributed to the advancement of sustainable practices within the organization at various facilities throughout New York City.

From 2010 to 2018, Mr. Barber worked with FBS intelligent Engineering (iE) Ltd as a subcontractor for the United States Department of State and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), focusing on tenant relations, counterterrorism response procedures and preventative maintenance. During this period, he distinguished himself as one of the only 2 chief engineers assigned to the U.S. mission to the United Nations, collaborating with six sitting ambassadors and partnering with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) at a government building managed by the General Services Administration. His work in this high-security environment required him to maintain a Top Secret security clearance, further underscoring his professionalism and trustworthiness.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Barber held several key roles at the leading real estate firm CBRE from 2002 to 2010, including chief engineer and property supervisor from 2006 to 2007. This tenure saw him manage operations for a 780,000-square-foot property at the Drug Enforcement Administration building in New York City for over nine years while also contributing to a prominent high-line project near Chelsea Piers.

Mr. Barber began his professional journey in construction with a focus on playgrounds before moving into commercial sectors, where he advanced from helper to mechanic, engineer, assistant chief engineer and ultimately chief engineer. Throughout the various projects that included his involvement, he has collaborated with over 500 partners and aided in the construction of 80 compliant apartments.

Alongside his engineering and supervisory roles, Mr. Barber continues to make an impact through engagement with numerous industry organizations. He currently serves as student president of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) student chapter and National Society of Leadership and Success at New York City College of Technology (City Tech CUNY) and holds leadership roles on the City Tech CUNY advisory commissioning board. He is also involved with the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Project Management Institute, the National Society of Black Engineers, The National Society of Collegiate Scholars, BMI, ASHRAE, ASME, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, among many others.

Mr. Barber's academic background includes a Bachelor of Technology in facility management and sustainability as well as an Associate of Arts and Sciences in environmental engineering control technologies, both obtained from City Tech CUNY. During his time at NYCCT, he won 4 scholarships and was flown out to WWP in Minneapolis and Fusion in San Francisco. A lifelong learner dedicated to continuous improvement, he has accumulated more than 1,600 continuing education units through trade schools, online universities, General Services Administration (GSA) programs, coursework at Turner Institute IFMA training and participation in the Local 94 Apprenticeship Journeyman Program.

To augment his technical proficiency and leadership capabilities, Mr. Barber has earned numerous certifications through the United States Environmental Protection Agency including in funding resources, data mapping and the detection and forecasting of harmful algal blooms in the United States. He has also obtained several credentials from Skillsoft in leadership transitions, effective stakeholder communications and effective customer service and completed multiple project management courses through software skills, GSA Online University, FDNY, Red Vector, Museum of Natural History, Yale, IFMA, and LinkedIn.

Mr. Barber's thought leadership extends into authorship; he has published several works that explore the mentorship challenges faced by Black professionals who navigate biased industries within corporate America, all while emphasizing the lessons he has learned across organizations throughout his career journey. He is currently writing an inspirational book that will further detail these experiences while highlighting the transformative power of mentorship. He has been published by Fexa Facilities News for articles about AI and its impact on Facilities Management.

Additionally, Mr. Barber frequently organizes events that feature distinguished panelists such as alumni overseeing major hospital facilities such as New York-Presbyterian or directors at global companies like Red Bull, and Highgate hospitality, demonstrating his commitment to providing resources across generational divides while creating reciprocal learning environments.

As a panelist speaker at events such as Grace Institute; a non profit organization geared around women empowerment, as well as professional networking events including those hosted by the Greater New York Chapter of IFMA on vendor relations or World Workplace International Facility Management Association conferences — and through collaborations with global engineering leaders — Mr. Barber continues to shape the industry discourse around sustainability, innovation and artificial intelligence integration within facilities management.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Mr. Barber is known for his active engagement in community activities such as donating to charitable organizations, volunteering at St. Paul's soup kitchen and collaborating with Natural Areas Conservancy and parks departments on playground clean-up initiatives, as well as conducting impactful research on understanding the impacts of climate change on building energy consumption, Building for Energy Efficiency: Innovation in sustainable Healthcare facility design, advancement of air measurement in indoor environments in building entrances, cost Analysis for Implementing LL97 in buildings: Cheapest Fuel vs Lowest Penalty, and common ground bio diversity research projects.

Throughout both his academic tenure and professional career, Mr. Barber has been recognized with numerous accolades for exceptional leadership and engineering operations. He was presented with the Men to Watch Award from Black Leaders Worldwide and nominated for the Facilities Management Achievement: Maintenance and Operations Award from IFMA, both in 2026, and was named Manager of the Year and Simi annual manager in the same year, by Marriott Courtyard in 2025 while being spotlighted by Highgate Engineering Council for his experience and forward impact on the organization in 2026. He also was placed in the spotlight for CUNY New York City College of Technology for several distinguished accomplishments in 2026. His earlier recognitions include five years of outstanding performance at CBRE, awarded in 2008, along with dean's list as the president of both the National Society of Leadership and Success and IFMA student chapter while being appointed the only student to sit on the commissioning advisory board at NYCCT; Welcomed into two Honor Societies, NSLS and NSCS induction at City Tech CUNY.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey to date, Mr. Barber credits his mother as his hero and greatest influence; her resilience inspired him to pursue excellence regardless of the obstacles he has faced or the bias he has encountered throughout his career journey.

Happily engaged to be married and a proud father of one son and one daughter, Mr. Barber enjoys writing books and spending quality time with his children who are actively involved in activities such as dance, taekwondo, T-ball and baseball; his son is also a high achiever and has been selected to participate in his school district's REACH program.

Looking to enhance his work-life balance in the coming years, Mr. Barber aspires to manage company portfolios within his industry, sharing benchmarking practices while reducing global emissions and educating others about long-term environmental impacts.
