For over 15 years, she has overseen the growth of the studio from its humble beginnings in a friend's basement to a thriving enterprise with approximately 300 enrolled dancers, including about 100 competitive participants. Under Ms. Barker's direction, DancEvolution has become known for its comprehensive curriculum, offering classes in ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, and other forms of dance for students as young as two years old through adulthood. The studio also provides specialized programs for women in their 40s, 50s and 60s.

As part of her daily responsibilities, Ms. Barker manages all aspects of the studio's operations, including curriculum development, class scheduling and administrative oversight. She is actively involved in teaching classes across all age groups and mentoring instructors on effective curriculum delivery and teaching objectives. Ms. Barker's responsibilities extend to designing lesson plans, coordinating practice schedules, and leading both evening and early morning instruction sessions to meet program needs. Notably, the studio employs between 16 and 20 teachers and assistants, along with a costume designer, office manager, and staff dedicated to social media and merchandise marketing, totaling around 25 regular employees.

A significant milestone in Ms. Barker's career was the expansion of DancEvolution's physical footprint. After initially operating out of a converted garage due to increasing enrollment and neighborhood concerns, she purchased her first building in 2018 and expanded further in 2021. This growth was achieved despite the challenging commercial real estate landscape in Flagstaff.

Before establishing her own studio, Ms. Barker served as a choreographer for the Mesa Easter Pageant in Mesa, Arizona. She began her formal dance training at Classic Image Dance in Mesa and continued her education at various studios throughout the area. Since 2008, she has worked as a choreographer while maintaining an active presence as a dancer since the age of three.

In addition to her work at DancEvolution, Ms. Barker has contributed to the broader dance community as the danceline head coach at Coconino High School since 2021 and as the dance team head coach at Northern Arizona University since 2024. In these roles, she coaches teams, coordinates rehearsals and training sessions, and supports student-athletes' development both on and off the stage.

Inspired by an engaging high school mathematics teacher who made the subject approachable for students facing challenges with the subject, Ms. Barker initially aspired to teach high school math. She taught for one year before taking time off following the birth of her first child. During this period away from traditional teaching, Ms. Barker was invited by a friend to teach dance classes. This decision ultimately redirected her professional path toward entrepreneurship and arts education.

Ms. Barker's academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in mathematics education from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 2007. Her civic engagement includes volunteering at assisted living centers, supporting local families through the Family Food Center and participating in Victory Day events at Northern Arizona University. Ms. Barker also dedicates time to mentoring through church-based initiatives.

In recognition of her contributions, Ms. Barker received several honors, including the Athena Award in 2020, acknowledging her perseverance in building DancEvolution from the ground up and her commitment to fostering a positive culture rooted in core values such as love, excellence, accountability and positivity.
