LIVONIA, MI, June 08, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert B. Ruokolainen has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Marked by significant achievements and leadership roles across the automotive and manufacturing sectors, Mr. Ruokolainen has led a distinguished career in engineering, applied physics and process development. He is the owner of and lead technologist at Roupe Consulting in Livonia, Michigan, where he leverages more than two decades of expertise to guide clients through advanced technological challenges. Drawing upon his extensive background in materials science and industrial processing, he supports companies that seek to integrate cutting-edge solutions into their operations.

From 2017 to 2022, Mr. Ruokolainen served as an advanced senior engineer specializing in welding, laser, solid state and braze technologies at Stellantis (formerly FCA US LLC), in Auburn Hills, Michigan, a position he has held since 2013. He previously contributed as a senior technical specialist there for nearly a decade, during which he explored advanced design, manufacturing and production processes and implemented new technologies within the organization.

From 2011 to 2013, Mr. Ruokolainen served as a project engineer in manufacturing research and development at Focus: HOPE in Detroit, Michigan. Throughout this time, he contributed to initiatives that improved laser additive manufacturing and friction-stir processing for various United States Department of Defense programs.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Ruokolainen led a remarkable tenure of more than 25 years at General Motors Research. Beginning as a science assistant in research and development from 1983 to 1984, he soon advanced to become a senior science assistant from 1984 to 1985 and later excelled as a project scientist from 1985 to 1994.

As a senior researcher from 1994 to 2009, Mr. Ruokolainen achieved one of his most notable milestones: contributing to a groundbreaking program that utilized a variation of superplastic forming for aluminum deck lids on the Oldsmobile Aurora. Overseeing the construction of a dedicated plant for this process, he managed all laser cutting applications including procurement and operational setup, supervised robot programming and coordinated fixture fabrication.

The project involved leasing an 80,000-square-foot facility near Detroit, where multiple advanced technologies operated alongside the main superplastic warming technology known as quick plastic warming. This initiative enabled the production of complex aluminum components that could not be stamped using traditional methods due to material properties, significantly reducing vehicle weight and advancing industry standards.

Mr. Ruokolainen's technical expertise extends into the academic realm as well. He was an instructor at Schoolcraft College from 1992 to 1995, during which he led physics laboratory courses for young students in the school's Talented and Gifted Program, and taught physics and engineering majors as an adjunct instructor of physics at University of Michigan-Dearborn from 1983 to 1986.

Also a prolific innovator, Mr. Ruokolainen holds several patents that have contributed to advancements in materials engineering and manufacturing processes. Among these are a patent for mitigation of the effects of aluminum from AlSi-coated boron steels, secured in 2024; a patent for tailored core laminated sheet metal, granted in 2011; patents for battery tab joints and methods of making as well as corrosion-resistant laminated steel, both awarded in 2010; and a patent for a method for joining or repairing metal surfaces, granted in 2009.

Mr. Ruokolainen's professional affiliations further reflect his commitment to industry advancement and knowledge sharing. Since 2018, he has been a reviewer for Applied Optics, Optics Express and Optica. He has also chaired sessions at the Sheet Metal Welding Conference under the American Welding Society's Detroit section since 2014 and has been active with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Industrial Laser Community since 2011.

Hailing from an equally accomplished academic foundation, Mr. Ruokolainen earned a Master of Science in solid-state physics from Oklahoma State University in 1982, following a Master of Science in physics from Eastern Michigan University in 1980. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in industrial technology from Eastern Michigan, conferred in 1974.

To augment his technical knowledge, Mr. Ruokolainen was certified as a Lean Six Sigma green belt through New Horizons and completed workshops in process improvement, consulting and project management at Walsh College. Inspired by his father's career as an engineer in the automotive industry and influenced by his own studies at General Motors Institute of Technology (now Kettering University), he attributes much of his success to his enduring passion for continuous learning.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Mr. Ruokolainen is known for his impactful work with civic-minded organizations. He has served as a planning committee member for the Advanced Laser Application Workshop organized by Fabricators & Manufacturers Association International since 2010 and has reviewed scholarship applications for the Nuts Bolts & Thingamajigs Foundation since 2007.

A proud father of one daughter and grandfather to one granddaughter, Mr. Ruokolainen cherishes his family life alongside his professional commitments and maintains an active lifestyle through outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing.

Looking toward the future, Mr. Ruokolainen aims to make significant contributions within the materials and manufacturing sectors while assisting organizations in need of his expertise with advanced technologies. His legacy is defined by leadership, creativity, continual growth and an enduring commitment to helping others through everything he does.
