CHATHAM, NJ, June 12, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mark A. Patrick has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Patrick has established himself as a leading authority in financial risk, geopolitics and geoeconomics, fields that have become increasingly vital in today's rapidly shifting global environment. As the managing director at TIAA, a financial services organization in New York City, since 2016, he has overseen global country risk for general account investments spanning more than 100 non-U.S. jurisdictions. Mr. Patrick's responsibilities include conducting macroeconomic assessments of both U.S. and international economies, generating scenarios to support financial planning and capital stress testing, and managing the global credit risk team. He also evaluates country risk exposures, recommends changes to country limits and investment views, and assesses macroeconomic, geopolitical and geoeconomic developments that impact investment decisions and insurance portfolios.
In his leading role at TIAA, Mr. Patrick also advises business units on risks, mitigants and the suitability of international investments while monitoring global news flow to provide regular updates on macroeconomic conditions. He briefs senior management, board members, clients, and stakeholders on geopolitical and economic risks, manages ratings frameworks for potential loss modeling of credit assets, and conducts due diligence through international research and on-site engagements. Mr. Patrick's work further involves meeting with government officials, central bank leaders, investors, economists, journalists and diplomats to assess regional conditions. Additionally, he is a frequent presenter at industry conferences, client events and public forums on macroeconomic and geopolitical topics, collaborates with external research providers and analytical partners on political, economic and geopolitical intelligence, and participates in international affairs programs through professional organizations.
Before joining TIAA, Mr. Patrick served as an executive director at JPMorgan Chase & Co., first in New York from 2011 to 2014, where he focused on developed markets in Latin America within country risk management, then as head of Asia-Pacific country risk management in Hong Kong until 2016. During his tenure at JPMorgan Chase & Co., he led a two-year initiative to develop a loss-and-coverage platform for developing countries, a project that required significant planning and execution.
Between 2008 and 2011, Mr. Patrick was a senior vice president at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., where he served as the lead negotiator for the workout of derivatives stemming from the Lehman bankruptcy, one of the largest bankruptcies in history. Before this role, he was a senior vice president for global country risk at the firm from 2000 to 2008.
Mr. Patrick's career in public service began as a diplomat with the U.S. Department of State in 1991. He spent his final four years in Washington, D.C., after assignments in Singapore from 1994 to 1996 and Lima, Peru, between 1992 and 1994. While serving in the Office of Monetary Affairs within the Economic Bureau during the late 1990s Asian financial crisis, Mr. Patrick played a leadership role coordinating the State Department's response.
After graduating from college with an undergraduate degree, Mr. Patrick spent a year in the classroom teaching at Country Day School in San José, Costa Rica, from 1986 to 1987. He then worked for the National Association for the Southern Poor in Washington, D.C., between 1987 and 1988, promoting community political development.
Possessing a rich educational background, Mr. Patrick acquired a Bachelor of Arts in history from Pomona College in Claremont, California, in 1986. He then earned a master's degree in history from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1990, followed by coursework toward a Doctor of Philosophy in history on campus between 1988 and 1990 while working as a teaching assistant. Mr. Patrick's academic training has been instrumental throughout his career, sharpening his analytical skills and deepening his understanding of the historical context behind current events.
Mr. Patrick's expertise in his field is further recognized through his status as a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 2022. He has also been participating in the Market Monitoring Group of The Institute of International Finance since 2025 and became a member of the Council on Global Innovation and Competition in 2026.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Patrick has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to civic engagement through volunteer work with organizations such as The Ditchley Foundation and Heifer International. He also participates in cleanups in New York and meal package preparation initiatives for those in need.
Among Mr. Patrick's most notable achievements over the past decade at TIAA has been the implementation of a comprehensive framework of scenarios and tabletop exercises designed to assess a wide range of geopolitical and economic risks amid increasing global volatility. This proactive approach to risk management distinguishes him among peers in the insurance industry. Early on in his career, Mr. Patrick received recognition with a Superior Honor Award in 1998 while affiliated with the Economic Bureau.
Mr. Patrick attributes his success to an enduring curiosity about how individuals connect or struggle to get along across cultures and societies. This inquisitive nature led him initially toward academia but ultimately inspired him to pursue diplomacy after passing the highly competitive Foreign Service exam. Mr. Patrick's transition into finance was prompted by family considerations when preparing for an overseas diplomatic assignment. Recognizing an opportunity at a Wall Street bank seeking someone with international expertise rather than strictly financial credentials, he accepted a position establishing a country risk function, thus beginning his distinguished career in financial services.
Looking ahead, Mr. Patrick is dedicated to enhancing safety, security and effectiveness for the U.S. internationally while supporting TIAA's mission-driven focus on protecting vital interests, including safeguarding retirement security for university professors and administrators across the nation's tertiary education sector. Eager for the future, Mr. Patrick remains committed to creating a safer world by leveraging his diverse experiences for meaningful impact on global stability and prosperity.
