Before this role, Dr. Bongmba served as a church pastor at Berean Baptist Church in Kumba, Cameroon, for two years, where he led worship services and supported the spiritual needs of parishioners.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Bongmba taught religious knowledge at the high school level in Gembu, Nigeria. This experience enabled him to deliver foundational religious education to students and to develop his pedagogical skills. He also spent one year as a teacher in a public school in Nigeria, broadening his instructional experience across diverse educational settings. Dr. Bongmba began his professional journey as a teacher's assistant in Cameroon, where he spent several years supporting classroom instruction and contributing to student learning.
Dr. Bongmba's academic background includes a bachelor's degree in theology from North American Baptist Seminary (now Sioux Falls Seminary) and a bachelor's degree in sociology, mathematics and communications from the University of Sioux Falls, since 1985. He then completed a Doctor of Philosophy in the philosophy of religion from the Iliff School of Theology. In addition to his formal education, Dr. Bongmba received certification as a Baptist bible pastor from the Baptist Bible Training Center in 1977.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bongmba has demonstrated exceptional leadership within professional organizations. He maintains active involvement with the North American Association of Scholars on Cameroon and the Caribbean Philosophical Association. He previously served as the president of the African Association for the Study of Religions for 10 years. His presidency advanced scholarship on African religions and fostered international collaboration among scholars. Additionally, Dr. Bongmba chaired the dissertation research grant committee of the American Academy of Religion, served on the scholarship committee of the African Studies Association, and was active on the steering committee of the International Bonhoeffer Society's English-language section.
Beyond his work-related endeavors, Dr. Bongmba's civic engagement and cultural development initiatives included his role as a founding member of the Wimbum Cultural and Development Association. He has also worked alongside his spouse to promote progress within the Wimbum region of Cameroon. Together, they played an instrumental role in raising funds for a successful campaign that led to the establishment of a new Baptist hospital in Cameroon.
Dr. Bongmba's scholarly output includes several influential publications, including "Facing a Pandemic: The African Church and the Crisis of AIDS," published in 2007, and "African Witchcraft and Otherness: A Philosophical and Theological Critique of Intersubjective Relations," published in 2015. Notably, his research encompasses African religious practices, Christianity and political theology, and contributes significantly to academic discourse on these subjects.
In light of his success, Dr. Bongmba was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Zululand in 2016 and an honorary doctorate of divinity from Lund University in Sweden in 2018. His excellence has also been recognized through numerous awards, including multiple research awards, a Purple Feather Award from the University of Sioux Falls, a Dorothy Power Award for Excellence in Heritage and Thought at Baptist Seminary, and the Frantz Fanon Prize.
