Dr. Niu has established a distinguished career in academia and scientific research, marked by significant contributions to the fields of statistics, bioinformatics and biomedical sciences. Since 2017, he has served as a research assistant professor at the School of Medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans, where he is actively engaged in both teaching and research. In this capacity, Dr. Niu instructs graduate-level courses, such as Introduction to Bioinformatics and Advanced Bioinformatics, serving as both a course instructor and director. His teaching responsibilities extend to co-instructing additional classes and providing substantial support to students from diverse backgrounds, including those pursuing Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Dr. Niu's commitment to education is evident in his hands-on approach, guiding students through the complexities of computer science, statistics, chemistry, biology and microbiology as they relate to bioinformatics.

In addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Niu collaborates extensively with colleagues at Tulane University on data analysis projects involving statistical and bioinformatics methodologies. His expertise is frequently sought for clinical and epidemiological studies focused on human complex diseases, such as cardiovascular disorders, asthma, osteoporosis, breast cancer, prostate cancer and type 2 diabetes. Before his current role, Dr. Niu was a clinical assistant professor at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine on campus from 2014 to 2017. During this period, he taught eight graduate courses (five of them were often offered multiple times in an academic year, such as in both spring semester and fall semester of that academic year), primarily in programming and biostatistics, and played a pivotal role in training students in statistical software applications like R, SAS and SPSS for clinical and epidemiological research. Between 2012 and 2014, Dr. Niu was an assistant professor within the same department and taught graduate courses including Regression Analysis and Bayesian Inference.

Before joining Tulane University, Dr. Niu gained significant experience as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville from 2008 to 2012. There, he contributed to interdisciplinary research initiatives that bridged genetics, psychiatry and epidemiology. Dr. Niu's academic journey also includes notable appointments at his alma mater, Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, between 2004 and 2008, including assistant professor of genetics and epidemiology, assistant professor of medicine and assistant professor of epidemiology. These roles provided him with invaluable opportunities to supervise graduate students, a responsibility he regards as one of the most rewarding aspects of his profession.

Dr. Niu's educational background laid a strong foundation for his achievements, culminating in a Doctor of Science in Biological Sciences from Harvard University in 1998. His rigorous academic training equipped him with the analytical skills necessary for success in interdisciplinary research environments. Dr. Niu attributes much of his professional success to his education and training as well as perseverance, optimism, hard work and faith, qualities that have enabled him to overcome challenges and maintain a steadfast belief in his teaching, research, and scholarship abilities, devoting excellent service not only to the attainment of educational missions of his academic institutions, but also to the promotion of significant progress of global scientific communities.

Throughout his esteemed career, Dr. Niu has demonstrated exceptional expertise in applied research across computational, statistical, and biomedical sciences. He has published more than 100 scientific research articles and nine book chapters, underscoring his prolific contributions to the advancement of knowledge in his field. Notably, he co-authored a book titled 'Ontologies for Bioinformatics (Computational Molecular Biology)' via MIT Press in 2005, a highlight among his many publications, and contributed to an original article to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2024. Since 2020, Dr. Niu has also served as an associate editor on the editorial board for Frontiers in Psychiatry, a premier scientific journal, and as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. Furthermore, together with his colleagues at Harvard University, he has become recognized for being granted a U.S. patent for his scholarly work on haplotype determination, a testament to his innovative approach in genetics research.

Dr. Niu's work has been highlighted with several honors, including a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Travel Award from the National Institutes of Health in 2000 and recognition as an Outstanding Reviewer in the top 10th percentile awards from Atherosclerosis in 2016 and Methods in 2017, respectively.
