Leveraging more than two decades of excellence in addiction, opioid misuse and predictors of opioid misuse, Dr. Matta has earned distinction as a psychotherapist with Talk NYC! Psychotherapy. Since 2020, she has provided evidence-based psychotherapy while continuing scholarly research focused on addiction, chronic pain, and opioid misuse. Additionally, she has served as a lecturer and fieldwork director for the mental health and school counseling programs at Queens College since 2019 and continues to serve as an Adjunct Instructor at the University at Buffalo.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Matta began her career as a laboratory assistant for Mississippi State University in 1999 and became an administrative assistant for the Chair of International Security Studies in 2001. She subsequently served as a mentor and teacher for the Brazos School For Inquiry and Creativity in 2004 and became a data coordinator for the MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2005. Following this time, she was a community support supervisor for AHRC New York City in 2011 and took a role as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for FEGS in 2014. In 2015, she worked in a similar position for the START Treatment and Recovery Centers and continued her career as a graduate assistant for the field education department of the University at Buffalo School of Social Work in 2017.
Throughout her career, Dr. Matta has contributed a wealth of written works to her field, including authoring "Public Support for Deportation: The Effects of Ethnic Prejudice and Perceptions of Economic Competition in a Period of Economic Distress," which was featured in the Journal of Population Research in 2012. She also co-authored "Addictive Behaviors and Chronic Pain in a High-Risk Population: The Simple and Confounding Effects of Multiple Addictive Diseases" in 2016 and "Predictors of Pain Reliever Misuse Among Respondents of the United States 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health" in 2022, both of which were published with Sage.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Matta earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Texas A&M University in 2004 and a Master of Science in vocational rehabilitation counseling from Mississippi State University in 2011. Following these achievements, she attained an advanced certificate in mental health counseling in 2018 and a Doctor of Philosophy in counselor education in 2019, both from the University at Buffalo. Well-qualified in her field, she is a licensed mental health counselor, certified rehabilitation counselor, national certified counselor, and Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC).
Within the coming years, Dr. Matta plans to continue expanding her clinical practice, grow her online educational platform, author additional publications and self-help books, and continue conducting research on addiction.
