As a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, one of her groundbreaking contributions to medicine was her research on healthcare disparities experienced by ethnic and racial minorities and other underprivileged populations across the United States. In addition, she has studied the causes and distribution of diseases in human populations, with an emphasis on genetic and chronic diseases, as well as HIV and COVID-19. Dr. Mili's expertise in statistical research methodologies and epidemiologic analysis has positioned her at the forefront of medical innovation.

Born in Carthage, Tunisia, to a United Nations diplomat family, Dr. Mili was raised bilingual and developed a deep understanding of European cultures from a formative age. She received her early education in French, and upon her family's relocation to Geneva, Switzerland, she enrolled in a boarding school in Annecy, France. During her teen years, she attended English-language camps in England during her summer breaks. Dr. Mili continued to demonstrate an aptitude for mathematics, science, music, Latin, dance and gymnastics, culminating in a French baccalaureate in math and science, with honors, in 1973. She went on to matriculate at the University of Geneva, graduating in 1981 with a Doctor of Medicine. Upon receiving her medical degree, she accepted physician positions at various university hospitals and emergency rooms in Switzerland, Tunisia and Britain, including a notable stint as a researcher at King's College Hospital in London.

Subsequently, Dr. Mili received an invitation to study in the United States, where she earned a Master of Public Health in epidemiology from Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health in 1989. Then, in 1997, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy in epidemiology from the same institution. Equipped with a multidisciplinary education, Dr. Mili accepted her first role at the CDC in 1989, serving as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer within the division of birth defects and genetic diseases. As time progressed, she advanced within the organization's ranks and collaborated effectively with statisticians and epidemiologists, serving as a medical epidemiologist in the division of blood disorders, then senior medical epidemiologist in the division of global HIV and tuberculosis. She trained junior scientists in epidemiology and surveillance in both divisions.

During her long-standing tenure at the CDC, Dr. Mili instructed the Epidemiology in Action course and the Epidemic Intelligence Service summer course between 1991 and 1992. Similarly, she lectured on epidemiology and biostatistics at Emory University and on outcomes research in the departments of medicine and preventive medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine during the 1990s. Although she has achieved a myriad of career milestones, she cites her collaboration with the Morehouse School of Medicine in 2000 as a crowning highlight. There, she published pioneering research on healthcare disparities and became well-regarded for her scholarly work and peer-reviewed articles. Additionally, Dr. Mili's leadership prowess during the onset and height of the COVID-19 pandemic was especially noteworthy; she led a team of statisticians and epidemiologists, providing comprehensive analysis of the pandemic to guide policymaking in the United States. Her excellence in emergency response was critical to aiding national organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration and the White House, underscoring her influence on national health policies.

Dr. Mili maintains professional alignment with the Epidemic Intelligence Service Alumni Association, the CDC Employee Association of Emory Alumni and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors. Similarly, she served as a member and technical expert on the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Interagency Collaborative for Program Improvement Working Group since 2019. Testifying to her success, Dr. Mili has earned numerous accolades, including the CDC's Outstanding Epidemic Intelligence Service Award in 1991 and the Research Triangle Institute's Early Career Author Award in 2004. Furthermore, the CDC bestowed upon her the Excellence in Emergency Response Toby Merlin Award-Domestic and the Excellence in Epidemiology Award-Domestic, both in 2021.
