Over a career spanning more than five decades, Dr. Ellis has distinguished himself as a leader and innovator in biosafety, veterinary microbiology and immunology and animal disease research. His work has advanced vaccine development, diagnostic techniques and polymerase chain reaction applications, while also extending into wildlife forensics and international scientific organization management. Throughout, he has remained steadfastly committed to advancing public health, supporting agricultural communities and mentoring the next generation of scientists.

Since 2020, Dr. Ellis has held the titles of emeritus professor and emeritus biosafety director at Colorado State University. In this capacity, he remains engaged with the university community through initiatives such as the Healthy Aging Community newsletter, where he contributes to discussions on topics ranging from immunology to psychology and medicine. He also continues to provide consulting services to companies involved in clinical trials for immunologically driven cancer therapies and advanced treatments, ensuring biosafety guidelines are met during all phases of research.

From January 1, 1978, to June 30, 2020, Dr. Ellis served as professor and biosafety director at Colorado State University. Throughout his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping one of the world's largest and most robust biosafety programs. Initially joining the campus biosafety committee, he became the institution's first biosafety officer before rising to director of biological safety. Under his leadership, the program expanded significantly to oversee a vast array of research activities. Dr. Ellis was instrumental in developing and implementing laboratory safety protocols that set national and international standards.

Dr. Ellis' expertise extended beyond campus boundaries through his work with livestock ranchers across Colorado and internationally. He collaborated with producers to manage sheep and cattle diseases using adaptive management strategies when vaccines or cures were unavailable, helping sustain agricultural operations under challenging conditions. During the 1980s, he contributed to a United States Agency for International Development initiative in Peru, working alongside local university faculty and indigenous communities in the Andes to improve herd health practices in barter-based economies reliant on alpacas and sheep.

Demonstrating his commitment to scientific innovation, Dr. Ellis' laboratory was among the earliest adopters of polymerase chain reaction technology following its publication in Science in December 1985. By mid-1986, he had implemented PCR diagnostic applications at Colorado State University, revolutionizing veterinary diagnostics by enabling the amplification of small gene segments for more accurate disease detection. He also collaborated with the Colorado Division of Wildlife and other agencies on wildlife forensics projects, identifying species from blood, hair or meat samples to assist law enforcement efforts.

Prior to his tenure at Colorado State University, Dr. Ellis held a faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Science and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at South Dakota State University from 1972 through 1977. There he developed foundational expertise in animal disease research and diagnostic methodologies that would inform his later achievements.

Dr. Ellis' leadership extended into professional organizations central to his field. From 1987 through 2014, he served as executive director of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases (CRWAD), managing an international membership of up to 700 scientists and organizing annual meetings featuring hundreds of presentations. His stewardship guided CRWAD through significant technological transitions from paper-based systems to electronic platforms.

Additionally, Dr. Ellis is recognized for his service as president of ABSA International from 2008 to 2009 after multiple years on its council. ABSA International honored him with its two highest awards: the Everett Hanel Jr. Presidential Award in 2015 for outstanding contributions to biosafety and the Arnold G. Wedum Distinguished Achievement Award in 2020 for lifetime leadership and global impact.

In addition to these roles, Dr. Ellis independently established a week-long biosafety and biosecurity training course in Fort Collins in 2004 that trained over 1,000 participants worldwide before being integrated into ABSA's annual offerings in 2021.

Dr. Ellis's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from the University of Wyoming in Laramie in 1966. He continued his studies at Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine in West Lafayette, Indiana, earning both a master's degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in veterinary microbiology and immunology by 1972.

Although initially aspiring to become a veterinarian practicing mixed animal medicine in Lander, Wyoming, Dr. Ellis redirected his ambitions toward research after not gaining admission to veterinary school despite ranking first among Wyoming applicants during his junior and senior undergraduate years. This pivot led him directly into doctoral studies focused on animal disease research, a decision that shaped his lifelong career.

Throughout his professional life, Dr. Ellis has credited his family background and influential mentors for instilling values of perseverance and continuous improvement. He remains dedicated to learning from others while mentoring colleagues across disciplines.

Beyond his scientific pursuits, Dr. Ellis is deeply rooted in personal interests shaped by his upbringing in Lander after being born in Ogden during World War II while his father served in the Navy. He is an accomplished leatherworker, a craft he began as a child, having created intricate saddles, belts, purses and custom notebooks often used as professional awards or by family members and ranchers. Additionally, he enjoys walking and birdwatching with his wife.

Looking ahead, Dr. Ellis plans to continue consulting on the safe clinical development of new therapies for previously untreatable conditions, extending a legacy of service, innovation and mentorship in veterinary science and biosafety. Above all, he hopes to be remembered for work that directly benefits humanity — particularly his support of the livestock industry, farmers and ranchers, and his efforts to help researchers worldwide collaborate safely, ensuring infectious disease research never places surrounding communities at risk.
