CLARENDON HILLS, IL, July 31, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- David Mulder, PhD, professional photographer, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the July 2026 Chicago, Illinois, regional issue of TIME magazine.
From the moment in his childhood when he was handed an old Kodak bellows camera, Dr. Mulder fell in love with photography. He became the de facto family photographer, taking hundreds of black-and-white photos on trips and get-togethers. Dr. Mulder engaged with photography as an enthusiast for decades while primarily pursuing a career as a history teacher. He became increasingly pulled back into photography in the early 2000s, as digital technology made cameras faster, more reliable and more affordable. As Dr. Mulder explained it to one friend, "The technology of photography caught up with my ambition and my instincts."
After more than 25 years in education and administrative work, Dr. Mulder retired from his early endeavors in 2010 and became an independent professional photographer. Since then, he has taken every opportunity to practice and perfect his craft, specializing in wildlife photography. Dr. Mulder has visited 20 different countries, covering such locales as Argentina, Cambodia, Chile, Easter Island, the Galápagos Islands, the Himalayas, South Africa, Tibet and Vietnam. He has a wall in his home that serves as a showcase for his pictures of African wildlife.
Dr. Mulder's photography has been collected in several published volumes alongside his writing. His most recent book, "The American West: Photography of Grand Canyon and Beyond," was released in 2025. Dr. Mulder's other publications include "Our World Revealed: A Journey Through Photographic Images," "In the Heart of Africa: An Expedition Into Nature's Untouched Beauty," and "Capturing Wilderness: Exploring Nature's Beauty Through Photography."
As an amateur and a professional, Dr. Mulder has approached photography with one consistent guiding principle: capturing reality. Whether taking pictures of animals, people or the environment, he aims to crystallize moments that convey an undeniable truth about the subject. Dr. Mulder believes in the importance of this mission. He continues to be compelled by the breadth of what his photos can communicate — from how people halfway around the world live their lives to the fleeting emotion of joy in a child's laughing face.
WHERE TO NEXT?
Now in his 70s, Dr. Mulder remains eager to keep traveling to new places and finding new experiences worthy of taking pictures. He is currently planning to join a cruise through the Inside Passage to Alaska. Dr. Mulder emphasizes that he's not interested in the cruise ship experience. Rather, he's drawn to the opportunity to take pictures of whales during the trip.
COMMITMENT TO REALITY
When considering new trends in photography, Dr. Mulder is concerned about the emergence of artificial intelligence. He laments that utilizing this technology takes away from the sense of reality that makes photos so powerful. Dr. Mulder points to an example of one of his pictures, showcasing two vervet monkeys. He suggests that someone might want to use AI to change the background of the image to make the monkeys stand out more. "You don't have to change the background," he says. " It's just fine the way it is. That's what the jungle looks like."
