Dr. Guertin's distinguished career in medicine spans nearly four decades, marked by a steady progression through leadership roles and a commitment to operational excellence in anesthesiology and perioperative care. For five years, he has served as the chief perioperative medical director at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he oversees the management and operational efficiency of the operating rooms. In this capacity, Dr. Guertin has played a pivotal role in guiding the institution through significant expansion efforts, including the addition of new ambulatory sites and the development of a new hospital tower. His leadership extends to revamping preoperative and perioperative processes, most notably through the creation of ComPASS (Comprehensive Perianesthesia Systems and Solutions), which streamlines patient assessment and enhances surgical recovery.

Since 2019, Dr. Guertin has also held the title of professor of anesthesiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, reflecting his expertise in both clinical practice and academic leadership. He has concurrently directed the Faculty Leadership Institute at The Ohio State University's College of Medicine, where he is responsible for cultivating future leaders across all seven health science colleges.

Before these roles, from 2013 to 2022, Dr. Guertin served as the medical director of ambulatory surgical services at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, overseeing the growth of outpatient surgical capabilities and contributing to the institution's reputation for excellence in patient care. He was also an associate professor of anesthesiology on campus between 2013 and 2019. Earlier in his career, Dr. Guertin was a partner with Premier Anesthesiologists at The Ohio Surgery Center between 1998 and 2013, where he contributed to the center's growth and operational success. Dr. Guertin's expertise encompasses anesthesiology, ambulatory anesthesiology, leadership development and operational efficiency improvement, areas in which he is widely regarded as an authority.

A strong educational foundation has underpinned Dr. Guertin's achievements. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Wayne State University in 1984. He soon earned a Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1988, followed by a residency in anesthesiology at The Ohio State University in 1992. Dr. Guertin's influence extends into media through appearances on five different podcasts, including "Disruptors in Healthcare," which serve as lasting records for future generations.

Recognition for Dr. Guertin's contributions has included the Department of Anesthesiology Teacher-of-the-Year award at The Ohio State University in 1995 and being named The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business Weidler Scholar in 2015. However, he considers his most meaningful achievement to be his impact on developing others, especially through his role as the director of faculty leadership development for all seven health sciences colleges at The Ohio State University's College of Medicine. Dr. Guertin has received affirmations from countless professionals whose careers and lives have been positively transformed by his mentorship.

Dr. Guertin credits his success to unwavering effort, innate ability and formative parental influence, particularly that of his mother, who was a nurse anesthetist, as well as continuous learning and guidance from executive coaches. Notably, his career trajectory was shaped by a personal experience with an injury during high school that resulted in an extended hospitalization and inspired him to pursue medicine. While initially considering a career as a surgeon, advice from mentors during medical school led him to discover anesthesiology, a field that allowed Dr. Guertin to balance professional fulfillment with personal life while supporting patients during their most vulnerable moments.

Throughout his clinical practice years, Dr. Guertin has provided care for patients from all walks of life, including public figures and those without financial means, emphasizing compassion and service above all else. Looking ahead, he remains passionate about lifelong learning and guiding others on their professional journeys. He is deeply interested in longevity and regenerative medicine, currently pursuing advanced study through a fellowship with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M).
