Additionally, Dr. Allender has held the title of advisory scientist and program manager at Savannah River National Laboratory, also headquartered in Aiken, since 1978. When he joined the laboratory, it was managed by DuPont and had not yet been assigned national laboratory status. Despite changes in contractor organizations over the years, Dr. Allender has maintained continuity in his work environment, remaining largely in the same office throughout these transitions. Early in his tenure, he played a pivotal role in preparing an environmental assessment that determined the waste form for the Defense Waste Processing Facility, a milestone he considers one of his most significant professional accomplishments. This facility is responsible for handling high-level waste and spent fuel at Savannah River, underscoring Dr. Allender's impact on national waste management practices.
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Allender's academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Science in physics and mathematics from Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, earned in 1973. He continued his studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in materials science in 1978. While pursuing his graduate education, Dr. Allender engaged in summer jobs and assistantships that provided practical experience and shaped his early professional trajectory. The guidance of supportive supervisors also played a crucial role in fostering his growth and ability to take on increasing responsibilities.
Throughout his career, Dr. Allender has been recognized for his leadership within the nuclear materials community. He is a fellow of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) and has served as the president of the INMM Southeast Chapter. His professional affiliations also include involvement as a member of the American Ceramic Society, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to scientific challenges. Furthermore, Dr. Allender maintains affiliation with the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) in Germantown, Maryland, and through collaborative relationships with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Beyond his technical involvement and achievements, Dr. Allender has contributed to civic life through various organizations. He co-founded Cornell Broadway Stage, demonstrating an early commitment to creative collaboration during his academic years. His community involvement extends to service with United Way of Aiken County and membership on the board of directors for Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness (CNTA).
