Before his current appointments, Dr. Hartford served as the founder, professor of medicine and first director of the radiation oncology residency program at Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine from 2016 to 2023. The establishment of this residency program stands as a pivotal achievement in his career, reflecting his dedication to mentoring future leaders in oncology. During this period, Dr. Hartford also participated in the genitourinary cancer core committee for the NRG Oncology Clinical Trials Group and chaired the cancer clinical research quality improvement committee at Norris Cotton Cancer Center (now Dartmouth Cancer Center) at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
Between 2010 and 2021, Dr. Hartford served as an associate professor of medicine at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine. He previously served as the interim chief of the section of radiation oncology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center from 2006 to 2016, where he also served on the executive committee for Norris Cotton Cancer Center and acted as the principal investigator for the NRG-RTOG Clinical Trials Group through 2023. Dr. Hartford's leadership extended to directing continuing education courses at Norris Cotton Cancer Center between 2009 and 2023.
Earlier in his academic tenure, Dr. Hartford was instrumental in the classroom as an assistant professor of medicine at Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine from 2004 to 2010 and contributed as a researcher at the Steele Lab, Massachusetts General Hospital, from 1991 through 2004. He delivered numerous courses and lectures for medical students, residents and fellows at both Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine between 2004 and 2023 and Harvard Medical School from 1998 to 2004, where he also served on the admissions committee for nearly a decade beginning in 1996.
Dr. Hartford's academic foundation began with a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, with distinction, from Stanford University in 1983, followed by a master's degree in philosophy from Stanford University that same year. He then earned a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard Medical School in 1992, followed by an internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston in 1993, a Doctor of Philosophy in political economy and government from Harvard University in 1997, and both a residency and fellowship in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Dr. Hartford holds board certification as a diplomate with the American Board of Radiology, along with active medical licenses in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Further distinguishing himself, Dr. Hartford is involved with leading professional organizations. He is the president-elect of the New England Council of State Medical Societies and serves on the Council Steering Committee for the American College of Radiology. He is the immediate past president of the Council of Affiliated Regional Radiation Oncology Societies within the American College of Radiology and previously held roles as president-elect and president from 2020 to 2024. Dr. Hartford's service also includes membership in the American Medical Association House of Delegates, representing the New Hampshire Medical Society since 2022. Among other involvements, he has served on committees for both the Radiological Society of North America and the American Medical Association throughout his career. He has been elected a fellow of both the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American College of Radiology.
Dr. Hartford's civic engagement includes service on more than 20 National Institutes of Health-National Cancer Institute scientific study sections since 2004. He also provides ongoing support, both financial and organizational, for Christian ministries, educational institutions and charitable groups.
As a leading researcher, Dr. Hartford's scholarly contributions include co-authoring more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications since 1992, articles in professional journals, and authoring a novel, "The First Days of August," published by Archway Publishing in 2015. As Associate Editor at the international journal Practical Radiation Oncology since 2020, he manages its section "Lessons from Arts and Literature," which emphasizes the human dimensions of oncologic patient care. He has also contributed and participated as a cast member and band member with Up With People during the early 1980s.
