She initially served as a medical director at NorthStar Anesthesia in Muskogee, Oklahoma, between 2020 and 2023. Dr. Smay's tenure at NorthStar Anesthesia stands out as a significant milestone in her career. Dr. Smay's leadership roles at NorthStar Anesthesia come after garnering success as a pediatric anesthesiologist at Hillcrest Healthcare System in Tulsa from 2019 to 2020. She previously held the same title at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City between 2017 and 2019, where she provided specialized care for pediatric patients and advanced the practice of anesthesiology within the institution. Earlier in her career, Dr. Smay served as a pediatric anesthesiologist at St. John Health System in Tulsa from 2014 to 2017.

In addition to her clinical roles, Dr. Smay's academic contributions included her role as an assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center from 2012 to 2014. In this capacity, she played an integral part in training future anesthesiologists while advancing research and clinical practice within the department.

Dr. Smay's educational background is both comprehensive and exemplary. She earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Master of Business Administration in health sector management from Duke University. She then received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois in 2007. Dr. Smay's clinical training included a residency in anesthesiology, concluded in 2011, followed by a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology in 2012 at the college of medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Additionally, her credentials are further bolstered by board certifications in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology as well as completion of the Black Corporate Board Readiness Program in 2024, demonstrating her preparedness for leadership roles beyond clinical practice.

Reflecting her standing in the medical community, Dr. Smay's professional affiliations include active memberships with the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Pediatric Anaesthesiology and the American Board of Anesthesiologists. Since 2021, she has also been serving as a member of the board of advisors for Transdermal Solutions LLC.
