Mr. Buchanan's distinguished career in education spans more than four decades, all of which have been dedicated to Gideon High School in Gideon, Missouri. Entering his 44th year at the institution, he currently serves as the school's athletic director, a position he has held since 1994. In this capacity, Mr. Buchanan oversees the maintenance of athletic fields, manages all paperwork and scheduling for the athletic department, supervises gymnasium operations and ensures the smooth day-to-day functioning of all school sports programs, including volleyball and cheerleading. His leadership continues to shape the school's athletic offerings and support student athletes across multiple disciplines.

Before focusing exclusively on his duties as an athletic director, Mr. Buchanan served as the principal at Gideon High School for over 12 years, between 2005 and 2017. During his tenure as the principal, he drew upon his deep understanding of students' backgrounds and circumstances, cultivated through years of relationship building within the community. Mr. Buchanan approached the role as a full-time commitment, striving to be present for every student and to make a positive difference in their lives.

Before taking on the leadership role of principal, Mr. Buchanan was both a teacher and high school basketball coach at Gideon High School from 1994 to 2005. As a coach, he guided his teams with a focus on mentorship and personal connection, leading his basketball team to the state finals in 2016 and surpassing 300 career wins in basketball. Mr. Buchanan also earned several district championships in baseball during this period and was recognized eight times as conference Coach of the Year in Basketball and 3 times in Baseball. reflecting his expertise in coaching and student development.

Earlier in his career, between 1983 and 1994, Mr. Buchanan taught and coached junior high school basketball and high school baseball. His own experience as a student-athlete at Gideon School informed his coaching philosophy and enabled him to build strong relationships with young people. The continuity of working within one school throughout his entire professional life allowed Mr. Buchanan to know students from an early age and develop lasting connections with both students and their families.

Mr. Buchanan's educational background has played a pivotal role in shaping his approach as an educator and leader. He holds a bachelor's degree from Arkansas State University, followed by a master's degree and a specialist degree in administration education from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. These academic achievements provided him with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective school leadership and administration. Mr. Buchanan's success is rooted not only in formal education but also in his unwavering commitment to understanding students' lives beyond the classroom and maintaining close relationships with parents throughout the community.

Throughout his career, Mr. Buchanan has been an active member of the Missouri State High School Activities Association and the Missouri Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. In addition to his professional affiliations, he is actively involved in local church activities, further demonstrating his dedication to service within Gideon and its surrounding areas.

Mr. Buchanan's commitment to excellence was recognized regionally when he was named Coach of the Year at the Semoball Awards in 2016, an honor that holds particular significance due to its regional scope across southeast Missouri. Looking ahead, he hopes to see continued positive change within his community and across the country through a renewed focus on education's importance. Mr. Buchanan believes that schools play an essential role by providing opportunities for all children regardless of background or circumstance and hopes that this commitment will remain central to Gideon High School's mission moving forward.
