HOUSTON, TX, September 09, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jorge Lopez has been recognized for achievement in the petroleum industry. Dr. Lopez currently serves as the Chief Scientist at SeisNautics LLC, a consulting practice he established in Houston in 2026 following his retirement from Shell after nearly 30 years of service.

Launching SeisNautics LLC was a direct response to immediate consulting opportunities, including work with a company Dr. Lopez had previously collaborated with during his tenure at Shell. As the sole member of the practice, he focuses on developing innovative solutions and concepts for clients in reservoir monitoring and economic optimization of oil field production, areas in which he has achieved recognized expertise. Eager for the future of his practice, Dr. Lopez intends to maintain a specialized approach, prioritizing concept development and strategic guidance over expanding into a larger enterprise.

Prior to the conclusion of his long-standing association with the oil company, he spent seven years in Brazil, first as a senior principal geophysicist with Shell Brasil, where he contributed to major advancements in geophysical acquisition and analysis. He simultaneously managed the Shell Brasil subsurface technology group from 2021 to 2026. Dr. Lopez's tenure in the country included overseeing major research and development investments mandated by local regulations. His leadership during this period encompassed numerous successful initiatives, most notably the On-Demand Ocean Bottom Node project, a landmark joint venture with Petrobras and industry partners that he regards as the defining milestone of his career. This project not only advanced technological capabilities in reservoir monitoring but also fostered collaborations with universities and other companies.

Before his assignments in Brazil, between 2014 and 2018, Dr. Lopez led the areal monitoring team at Shell Oil Company, further refining techniques for large-scale field surveillance. Earlier roles included project leader for enhanced oil recovery new technology and discipline lead for geophysics, as well as project leader for areal monitoring, both based in Houston. In these capacities, Dr. Lopez guided multidisciplinary teams through complex research initiatives aimed at improving oil recovery processes and monitoring methodologies.

Dr. Lopez's experience also encompassed operational assignments as an exploration geophysicist, after working as a senior geophysicist at Shell Oil Company in New Orleans. His career at Shell began in Houston as a research geophysicist from 1997 to 2000, focusing on seismic imaging research and development.

Before joining Shell, Dr. Lopez spent 8 years in academia following completion of his doctorate. He was an instructor of physics at Rice University in Houston from 1995 to 1997 after holding positions as a visiting assistant professor between 1993 and 1995 and as a postdoctoral research associate starting in 1989 at Texas A&M University in College Station. Dr. Lopez's academic journey began in 1984 as a research assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which he maintained for five years.

Dr. Lopez's educational background laid the foundation for his distinguished career. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics in his native country of Peru before completing a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989. Dr. Lopez's early fascination with understanding how things work drew him toward physics during high school and shaped every step of his academic and professional journey.

Maintaining active involvement with leading professional organizations such as the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, Dr. Lopez has also served as a mentor within the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He is also a member of the Brazilian Geophysical Society. These affiliations reflect his dedication to fostering knowledge exchange within the global geoscience community. Additionally, Dr. Lopez served as an e-mentor for the Society of Petroleum Engineers from 2011 to 2025, demonstrating ongoing commitment to supporting emerging talent within his field.

Throughout his professional career, Dr. Lopez has contributed several notable innovations to the field of geophysics. Among his major accomplishments, he secured numerous U.S. patents related to seismic signal recording systems, methods for seismic data acquisition and advancements in fiber optic distributed acoustic sensing technologies. Hard work and dedication have been central themes throughout Dr. Lopez's life, fueling both his academic pursuits and professional accomplishments.

Recognition for Dr. Lopez's contributions includes the Foreign Geophysicist SBGf Award from the Brazilian Geophysical Society in 2025, an accolade that honors outstanding foreign professionals. Earlier, he received a Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Award from Great Minds in STEM in 2024 and professional recognition from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers that same year.

Dr. Lopez strives to balance his professional endeavors. Now retired from corporate life but active as a consultant, he enjoys dedicating more time to his family, as well as athletic pursuits. He is also considering future possibilities for relocation or continued collaboration with universities abroad, particularly those in Brazil with which he has maintained strong ties through past projects.
