HOUSTON, TX, September 24, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dan (Daan) Machiel Droogleever has been recognized for achievement in the aviation, transportation and maritime industry.

Mr. Droogleever's distinguished career in aviation, transportation and maritime industries spans more than three decades, marked by a steadfast commitment to safety and expertise. From 1984 to 2011, he served (mostly) as captain for Continental Airlines in Houston, Texas as well as brief stints with Aer Lingus, Ireland and Air Ops, Sweden. During his 27-year tenure with the airlines, Mr. Droogleever carried approximately one million passengers without a single accident or incident, a record he considers among his proudest professional achievements. His responsibilities included operating flights throughout the Americas and, in later years, piloting widebody aircraft to destinations across Europe, Israel, Hong Kong and India. As a member of the Golden Eagles, the Continental-United Airlines Retired Pilots Association, he remains connected to the professional community.

Prior to joining Continental Airlines, Mr. Droogleever built his flight experience with various smaller companies in the United States. These formative years provided him with essential skills and exposure to diverse operational environments, laying the groundwork for his subsequent success at a major airline. He credits these experiences with broadening his understanding of navigation and weather analysis.

Before transitioning into aviation, Mr. Droogleever served as a merchant marine officer for Royal Nedlloyd Lines in Rotterdam from 1971 to 1977. His work aboard large general cargo ships took place before containerization transformed global shipping. Extended periods in port allowed him to explore more than 80 countries during his combined maritime and aviation careers. His expertise in maneuvering large vessels was further enhanced by this early experience at sea.

Mr. Droogleever's professional journey also includes nearly two years of military service as an assistant air traffic controller in the Royal Netherlands Air Force. This period of compulsory service provided him with additional insight into aviation operations and enhanced his skill set in teamwork, navigation and weather observation.

His academic background is equally robust. Mr. Droogleever earned a master's degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1983, completing the program in just 1.5 years due to advanced standing from European qualifications. He also holds a master's degree equivalent from the Merchant Marine Academy in the Netherlands, graduating in 1977 after an accelerated program that built on his prior training at Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart (Merchant Marine Academy), where he earned a bachelor's degree in merchant marine studies in 1971. The rigorous education system of postwar Rotterdam instilled discipline and resilience, qualities that have defined his approach to both personal and professional challenges.

Beyond his primary career roles, Mr. Droogleever has demonstrated civic engagement and leadership through various associations. From 1997 to 2003, he served as president of the Ponderosa Forest Civic Association, contributing to community development initiatives. He is also involved with the Houston Area G Gaugers (HAGG), reflecting his passion for model railroading, and supports numerous charitable organizations as a donor. In recognition of his dedicated service upon retirement from Continental Airlines in 2011, he received a letter and glass plaque acknowledging his contributions.

In his personal life, Mr. Droogleever was born in Rotterdam and has been married to Philippina Elpa Lagora since 1980. Together they have three children: Pauline Joy, Michael and David. His interests include sailing, boat restoration, model railroading, writing, yard work and gardening, walking, biking, tennis and designing and building projects.
