PARKVILLE, MO, September 25, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sieglinde C. Othmer, PhD, has been recognized for achievement in publishing.
Dr. Othmer's most recent professional milestone began in 2024, when she founded Joyous Longevity Books. As owner, she established the company as a platform to share her passion for writing and publishing, particularly focusing on themes of positivity and healthy aging.
The inspiration for this venture arose after a period of personal reflection at age 80, following her husband's passing, which led Dr. Othmer to channel her energy into research and writing. This resulted in the publication of "Joyous Longevity: The A-Z Field Guide" in 2024. Through Joyous Longevity Books, she continues to develop new works, including a forthcoming sequel to her longevity guide.
Prior to launching her own publishing business, Dr. Othmer built a distinguished career in academia and psychiatric research. After arriving in St. Louis from Germany in 1967 with her husband, she initially sought a faculty position in the history department at Washington University. Although her specialization in human rights in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries did not align with departmental needs at that time, she adapted by becoming a stay-at-home mother for several years.
Once her youngest child started kindergarten, Dr. Othmer transitioned into part-time research within the psychiatry department at Washington University, where she began her work in psychiatric research and later administered a psychiatric outpatient clinic.
Additionally, Dr. Othmer's career includes a significant creative shift from academic research and administration to fiction writing. She is especially proud of this transition, which allowed her to explore whimsical narratives centered on animals who embark on artistic adventures around the world. Her book "Whims, Wits and Whiskers: A Californian Pet Tale," published through iUniverse in 2012, and its 2019 follow-up exemplify this imaginative turn. To date, Dr. Othmer has authored nine books spanning both nonfiction and fiction genres, with her 10th currently in progress.
Dr. Othmer earned a Doctor of Philosophy in social sciences from the University of Hamburg in Germany. Her academic training encompassed history and French literature as well as social sciences, providing a strong interdisciplinary foundation for both her scholarly pursuits and later creative endeavors. She credits much of her resilience and adaptability to formative experiences as a refugee fleeing East Germany with her mother in 1948.
In addition to her publishing work, Dr. Othmer has maintained active involvement with civic organizations over several decades. Since 2011, she has participated in fundraising efforts with Together Women Rise, an organization dedicated to empowering women worldwide through collective giving. She also served as a board member for the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the United Nations Association of the United States of America and is a member of the Society of Children's Literature.
Notably, Dr. Othmer's literary accomplishments have garnered recognition. She received the Distinguished Favorite honor from the NYC Big Book Award in 2025 and has been acknowledged by The Kirkus Prize, Five Stars from Readers' Favorite, The Prairies Book Review and BookLife by Publishers Weekly.
Beyond her professional life, Dr. Othmer enjoys gardening, watching hummingbirds on her kitchen deck, skiing, writing, cooking, and spending time with her three children and three grandchildren. Looking ahead, she intends to continue enhancing people's lives through her books by inspiring older adults toward positivity while encouraging younger readers to adopt lifestyle choices that foster longevity and joy. Dr. Othmer's upcoming work will include recipes and perspectives on cultivating happiness at every stage of life, underscoring a lifelong commitment to improving well-being across generations.
