Since 2023, he has served as an engineering consultant on a self-employed basis in Australia, continuing to provide specialized consulting services across Australia, Asia and Central Asia. Mr. Gnanananthan's ongoing work has included two projects funded by the Asian Development Bank and several more by various government agencies, focusing on feasibility studies, depot and railway workshop design, rolling stock strategy, fleet planning for meter-gauge and broad-gauge and dual-gauge systems, among other areas.

In 2023, Mr. Gnanananthan contributed his expertise as a workshop expert and task manager with SYSTRA, one of the world's leading engineering and consultancy groups specializing in public transport and mobility solutions, in Bangladesh. He led multidisciplinary teams on Asian Development Bank-funded projects, conducting comprehensive assessments of existing railway facilities and developing broad-gauge conversion initiatives. Mr. Gnanananthan's role encompassed defining rolling stock depots, carriage and wagon workshops in Chittagong and Dhaka, preparing long-term demand forecasts, developing fleet growth models and establishing maintenance strategies to ensure operational sustainability.

From 2022 to 2023, Mr. Gnanananthan worked as a rolling stock engineering consultant in Brisbane, Queensland. During this period, he provided technical guidance on depot design and maintenance optimization for major rail projects. Between 2017 and 2022, Mr. Gnanananthan was engaged as a rolling stock and workshop expert as well as a task manager for SYSTRA on Bangladesh Railway's Asian Development Bank feasibility and design projects. His responsibilities included preparing tender documents, feasibility reports, and submissions to the Asian Development Bank while supervising national engineers and coordinating large-scale project teams.

Mr. Gnanananthan served from 2014 to 2017 as a rolling stock and rail asset optimization specialist with FEMOL International Pty. Ltd., which serves as a consulting company that provides professional strategic project advisory to the rail industry. He also served as an engineering consultant specializing in rolling stock and depot design for the Mongolian Railway in Mongolia between 2013 and 2014.

From 2007 to 2013, Mr. Gnanananthan held the position of master rolling stock and capacity planning coordinator at QR National (now Aurizon LTD) in Brisbane, following his title as principal asset strategist at Queensland Rail between 1998 and 2007. During this time, he oversaw significant growth in coal transportation volumes by optimizing resource utilization, minimizing breakdowns and resolving unloading issues in collaboration with research engineers. Mr. Gnanananthan's team managed the manufacture of approximately 6,000 coal wagons and the procurement or rebuilding of over 60 electric locomotives.

Among his earlier influential roles, Mr. Gnanananthan was a principal asset strategist at Queensland Rail from 1998 to 2007. He developed strategies for asset management that supported the expansion of coal transport from mine to port while maintaining a strong focus on reliability and maintenance optimization. Between 1990 and 1998, Mr. Gnanananthan worked as a mechanical engineer at Queensland Rail, where he designed wagon bogies and doors, modified passenger rolling stock and introduced condition monitoring systems that improved safety by reducing wheel failures, a leading cause of derailments.

Earlier still, Mr. Gnanananthan briefly served as a building services engineer with Matthew Hall Mechanical and Electrical Engineers in Australia from 1989 to 1990. Before relocating to Australia, he excelled as a senior mechanical engineer at Project Management Services Ltd. in Sri Lanka for five years, beginning in 1983, where he managed large-scale engineering projects.

From 1980 to 1983 at Sri Lanka Cement Corporation, Mr. Gnanananthan held multiple roles, including maintenance manager, works engineer and mechanical engineer. He played a pivotal part in expanding cement plant operations by upgrading equipment and designing new workshops that enabled efficient plant maintenance.

Mr. Gnanananthan's role at the Sri Lanka Ports Authority between 1975 and 1980 as a mechanical engineer responsible for workshops supporting port infrastructure maintenance garnered him hands-on experience that allowed him to apply theoretical knowledge from his academic background directly to practical challenges within the industry. He began his professional journey shortly before this as an electrical engineer at Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. in Sri Lanka, starting in 1974 after completing his initial exposure as a trainee engineer with Ceylon Government Railway (now Sri Lanka Railways) in 1974.

Mr. Gnanananthan's academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Sri Lanka (now University of Moratuwa) in 1973. His passion for power mechanics during his school days inspired him to pursue this path. In pursuit of advanced expertise, Mr. Gnanananthan earned a Master of Engineering in mechanical engineering from the University of Queensland's St. Lucia campus in Australia in 1991. Additionally, he holds several certifications that have enhanced his effectiveness across diverse roles, including chartered professional engineer status from Engineers Australia (FIEAust), chartered engineer designation from the Engineering Council in the U.K., professional engineer registration on the National Engineering Register with Engineers Australia, registration as an APEC Engineer and, among others, machinery inspection and evaluation credentials through SKF.

Adding to his professional standing, Mr. Gnanananthan holds fellowships with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in the U.K. and FIEAust, along with membership in the International Association of Engineers. He also serves as an interview panelist for FIE Aust. Furthermore, Mr. Gnanananthan is also a life fellow of the International Biographical Association (IBA).

Beyond his technical accomplishments, Mr. Gnanananthan has dedicated significant time to civic engagement. Since 2022, he has served on the management committee of a religious charitable organization, where he helps provide food assistance and transportation support for those in need. As a volunteer donor with the Tamil Rehabilitation Association, he supports community welfare initiatives. Moreover, Mr. Gnanananthan contributes by mentoring university students through the University of Queensland's EAIT Industry Mentoring Program, offering practical opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience within industry settings.
