Ms. Lewis has established herself as an expert in special education, currently serving as an educator specialist resource teacher with the Clark County School District since 2025. In this capacity, she manages a caseload of 24 special education students and teaches five classes, including twelfth- and ninth-grade reading and English. Her responsibilities include preparing and implementing individualized education plans, conducting ongoing research and professional development, engaging with community organizations for classroom resources, collaborating with general education and special education teachers and modifying curriculum content to enhance student comprehension. Over her 24-year teaching career, she has taught approximately 3,000 students, maintaining active contact with at least 50 of them. She finds profound fulfillment in hearing from former students who attribute their success to her encouragement and belief in their potential.

Prior to her current position, Ms. Lewis was a special education teacher with Fairfax School District in Bakersfield, California, from 2016 to 2025, after 12 years as a sixth-grade teacher at Greenfield Union School District. In addition to her work in public education, she has served as a certified live instructor and nutritional coach with Team Beachbody Independent Business Coach in Bakersfield, California, since 2014.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Lewis spent 18 years working as a paralegal. Her legal background provided valuable skills in research, documentation and advocacy that have informed her approach to both teaching and community service. Beyond these primary roles, she has held positions as a mail carrier, worked at UPS, provided care in daycare settings and gained experience in retail. The only field she has not worked in is food service. Drawing on this varied work history, she encourages her students and grandchildren to learn different skills and trades so they have options if one path does not succeed.

Ms. Lewis's academic achievements laid the foundation for her professional accomplishments. She earned a Master of Arts in special education from California State University, Bakersfield in 2017, and also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Management from Mount St. Mary's University, completed in 1978. In addition to these degrees, she has obtained a computer science supplemental credential from California State University, Bakersfield in 2022.

The challenges Ms. Lewis has faced throughout her life have shaped her positive outlook and dedication to making a difference for others. Initially pursuing a career in law by earning a Paralegal Certificate from University of La Verne, La Verne, CA, in 1991 while working as a paralegal for nearly two decades, she realized that practicing family law would require personal compromises she was unwilling to make. A pivotal moment occurred when her oldest son experienced heart and kidney failure at age eighteen. During this time, the compassion of social workers inspired Ms. Lewis to transition into education rather than social work or law. After twelve years teaching junior high school students, she shifted her focus to special education out of a desire to support students who are often misunderstood or overlooked.

Ms. Lewis's commitment extends beyond the classroom through active involvement with civic organizations. She serves as an ambassador for Donate Life, advocating for organ donation after the organization supported her son's kidney transplant. Additionally, she volunteers at the Family Registration Center assisting families with enrollment processes and participates in church community outreach initiatives, such as distributing back-to-school supplies. Furthermore, she volunteers at Olive Crest, which is an organization that is dedicated to preventing child abuse by strengthening, equipping, and restoring children and families in crisis—"One Life at a Time."®.

Family plays an important role in Ms. Lewis's life. She comes from a large family rooted in Mississippi. Her mother had four children while her father had thirteen, resulting in seventeen siblings altogether. Her cousin is Calvin Broadus — widely known as Snoop Dogg — who has provided entertainment at family reunions where relatives showcase their talents. These gatherings have fostered strong connections among extended family members over the years. In addition to raising two sons of her own, Ms. Lewis has built an extended family through meaningful relationships with students whose lives she continues to influence and celebrate well beyond graduation.

Looking ahead, Ms. Lewis plans to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in special education and expand her motivational speaking engagements following an invitation to present at the annual conference hosted by Southern Utah University and NASA on cultural diversity in the classroom. She also aspires to take on leadership roles in education so she can leverage her extensive experience to create a lasting impact across the field. She encourages others to believe that they can achieve their goals no matter the circumstances or obstacles.
