In this capacity, Mr. Reed oversaw the quality assurance programs for all three nuclear units, ensuring that operational standards were met and maintained. His expertise in nuclear energy and emergency planning positioned him as a pivotal figure in upholding the facility's rigorous protocols.

Before his tenure at Salem – Hope Creek, Mr. Reed held the position of corporate emergency planning, safety and health manager at Columbia Nuclear Station with the Washington Public Power Supply System (now Energy Northwest). In this role, he was responsible for developing and implementing emergency preparedness strategies and health initiatives for the organization. Mr. Reed's work contributed significantly to ensuring the station's ability to comply with program regulatory requirements as well as its' ability to respond effectively to potential incidents while safeguarding both plant personnel and the surrounding community.

Demonstrating entrepreneurial initiative, Mr. Reed owned and operated a consulting company for 10 years. Through this venture, he provided specialized guidance on nuclear operations, quality assurance and emergency preparedness to clients across the industry. Mr. Reed's consulting work allowed him to share his knowledge widely and influence best practices throughout the field.

Throughout his career, Mr. Reed's dedication extended beyond technical contributions. Notably, he led nuclear safety culture assessments involving multidisciplinary teams evaluating operational effectiveness at various facilities. These confidential evaluations ensured that plants adhered to established procedures and fostered a site-wide culture of safety among personnel at each facility. Additionally, Mr. Reed participated in Joint Utility Management Audits and Nuclear Industry Evaluation Program audits, independently reviewing the quality assurance programs at several nuclear power stations across the country to verify compliance with industry quality assurance and quality control standards.

Mr. Reed's professional journey began with distinguished service in the U.S. Navy from 1972 to 1978, where he achieved the rank of E-6 first-class machinist mate. He volunteered for nuclear submarine service and successfully completed the Navy's rigorous nuclear power schools. This subsequently led to his advanced knowledge of plant systems maintenance and operations, and qualification on all nuclear watchstation's up to and including Engineering Watch Supervisor. His exceptional performance earned him Letters of Commendation from the commander of the Atlantic Fleet. During his military service, Mr. Reed was selected for the U.S. Navy's nuclear program due to his outstanding academic achievements in chemistry and physics. This opportunity laid the foundation for his subsequent success in commercial nuclear operations.

Mr. Reed's academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science in nuclear technology from Pacific Western University, acquired in 1990. This degree provided an additional foundation for his technical expertise and supported his advancement into leadership roles within the industry. Mr. Reed had previously become submarine qualified in 1975, a testament to his advanced training and operational proficiency during his naval service in the earlier stages of his career. Additionally, in 1979, while working for Toledo Edison at the Davis-Besse nuclear plant, he was selected to serve on a technical response team sent by the company to support response and recovery efforts during the Three Mile Island Unit 2 accident. Afterwards he became an Emergency Duty Officer responsible for providing protective action recommendations to the public in the event of a similar accident at the Davis-Besse station.

Active in his professional circle, Mr. Reed became involved with several professional organizations, including the American Nuclear Society, the American Society for Quality, and the Health Physics Society. He also played a critical role on national standards committees for nuclear power, contributing to the development of foundational quality assurance documents such as NQA1 and ANSI N45.2 through active participation with the American National Standards Institute. These standards have been adopted by every nuclear station in the U.S. and are recognized internationally, forming the basis for quality assurance programs worldwide. Mr. Reed's involvement included attending numerous meetings and conferences over many years, shaping guidelines that continue to influence global nuclear safety practices.

In addition to these affiliations, Mr. Reed has demonstrated civic engagement through his membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. He has also served as a volunteer supporting local first responder organizations in disaster response measures and with the development of engineering documents to help them meet Environmental Protection Agency requirements.

A prolific writer, Mr. Reed has authored several works reflecting both personal interests and professional experiences. His publications include "Happiness is a Cool Reactor," which discusses firsthand insights into the Three Mile Island accident, and "The Real Night Order Book," chronicling life aboard his submarine, Billfish. Both of these have been cataloged by the Library of Congress. Mr. Reed recently published "John Gray, the Last Surviving Soldier of George Washington's Revolutionary Army," which traces lineage from Scotland and Ireland through America's founding era. This project was inspired by extensive genealogical research conducted alongside his wife, who is a descendant of John Gray.

Mr. Reed's achievements have been recognized through numerous honors from the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations for his role in developing emergency preparedness policies and conducting educational seminars for peers. His success can be attributed to the support of his wife of more than five decades and their two children, who have relocated across the country nearly 30 times due to military assignments, career opportunities and family commitments.

Looking ahead, Mr. Reed remains dedicated to his wife while providing for his children and grandchildren through ongoing literary projects intended to benefit future generations.
