Dr. Teneva's distinguished career in environmental conservation and marine ecology is marked by her current leadership as Chief Executive Officer at OneReef Worldwide Stewardship, a role she has held since 2025. In this capacity, she is responsible for guiding the organization's mission to support communities in protecting their environments and providing technical assistance to those on the front lines of conservation in the Pacific. Dr. Teneva also serves on the Board of Directors at OneReef, a role she has held since 2018, demonstrating her long-term commitment to the organization's vision and governance.

In addition to her executive responsibilities at OneReef, Dr. Teneva founded WaveCrest Solutions in 2025, where she acts as principal. Through this venture, she leverages her expertise to bridge scientific research with practical applications in environmental policy and conservation strategy. Her advisory role on the board of Global Conservation since 2023 further underscores her influence in shaping global approaches to the protection of national parks globally. As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Mary G. Jameson Foundation since 2023, Dr. Teneva identifies and supports exceptional individuals and organizations dedicated to ocean conservation worldwide, with a particular focus on the Americas.

From 2023 to 2025, Dr. Teneva worked as a polar expedition guide for Seabourn Cruise Line, leading scientific explorations in extreme environments in Antarctica, Greenland, Svalbard, and the Northwest Passage and sharing her knowledge with diverse audiences. Her tenure as Vice President for oceans and area-based conservation at the World Wildlife Fund prior to that reflects her capacity for high-level strategic leadership within major international non-governmental organizations.

Between 2019 and 2022, Dr. Teneva directed programs at California Ocean Science Trust, where she created a Legislative Advisory service to ensure California legislators were basing policy on the best available environmental science. Her earlier experience includes serving as a Program Officer at OceanX, where she helped build the ocean exploration strategy and operations of the Dalio Family Foundation, creating the most technologically advanced ship-based program that generated critical ocean science, leading to new species protection priorities for the Caribbean. These roles allowed her to combine science, technology, and fieldwork, with policy advocacy and stakeholder engagement.

Dr. Teneva's foundation in conservation was established through positions such as Program Manager at Conservation International from 2014 to 2017 and consultant roles with Wildlife Conservation Society and The Nature Conservancy between 2014 and 2016. She contributed specialized expertise in sustainable fisheries, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Indigenous-led conservation, and food security, as well as ecosystem services.

Her early leadership emerged during her academic tenure as founder and president of Stanford Coastal Society (2009 to 2013), co-president of Stanford Environmental Consulting (2010 to 2011), and consultant for the Center for Teaching and Learning at Stanford University (2009 to 2011).

Throughout her career, Dr. Teneva has demonstrated an exceptional ability to create effective teams, foster positive organizational cultures, and build sustainable frameworks that ensure ongoing success in ocean conservation. She is particularly proud of establishing structures that enable communities to serve as caretakers for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) while advocating for robust policies that endure administrative changes. Her dedication to mentorship is evidenced by a mentorship award from Stanford University and ongoing involvement in initiatives such as career panels for graduate ocean science programs across California. She continues to mentor aspiring professionals navigating complex career paths within nature conservation.

Dr. Teneva's expertise spans marine ecology, environmental conservation, and policy advocacy — fields in which she is widely recognized for her leadership and innovation. Her professional affiliations include membership in The Explorers Club, the Society of Women Geographers, and the Cosmos Club, reflecting her standing among peers committed to exploration and scientific advancement.

The pursuit of education has been central to Dr. Teneva's journey since moving to the United States at age nineteen with the ambition to obtain higher education despite financial barriers. Securing a full merit-based scholarship enabled her to pursue undergraduate studies, followed by prestigious fellowships at Columbia University and Stanford University for graduate work. During her doctoral studies at Stanford University, she developed a passion for environmental advocacy that shaped her subsequent career trajectory.

Dr. Teneva's professional development has been influenced by invaluable mentorship throughout her career. She credits mentors who recognized her potential early on. Persistence has also played a critical role; she regularly engages with investors and foundations to secure funding for conservation initiatives, applying determination both professionally and personally.

A prolific contributor to scientific literature, Dr. Teneva has authored or co-authored numerous publications addressing critical topics such as coral reef health, fisheries production, climate change impacts on marine environments, integrated land-sea management strategies, ecosystem services valuation and ocean governance frameworks. Notable works include "Estimating the pelagic ocean's benefits to humanity can enhance ocean governance" published in Marine Policy (2021), "Living coral tissue slows skeletal dissolution related to ocean acidification" featured in Nature Ecology and Evolution (2019), "Linking landscape and seascape conditions: Science, tools and management" released by John Wiley & Sons Ltd (2018), among many others spanning leading journals such as PLoS One, Environmental Conservation, ICES Journal of Marine Science and Frontiers in Marine Science.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Dr. Teneva enjoys flying — having previously owned a small Cessna plane — which provides both recreation and an avenue for community service through animal rescue operations.

Looking ahead, Dr. Teneva aims to play an impactful role behind the scenes by amplifying the efforts of extraordinary leaders advancing environmental protection worldwide.
