Dr. Bryant has built a distinguished career in healthcare and medical education, marked by her expertise in Emergency Medicine, medical education, healthcare disparities and enhancing health equity. Since 2024, she has served as an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences College of Medicine in Memphis.
In these roles, Dr. Bryant dedicates significant time to educating students about healthcare disparities and strategies for improving health equity, as well as increasing community engagement to foster greater trust in the healthcare system. As the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, she is responsible for providing academic guidance, career counseling and emotional support to help medical students achieve their goals. Additionally, she advises students on networking strategies to secure jobs after medical school.
Alongside her academic responsibilities, Dr. Bryant continues to practice clinically, working in the emergency department at a Level 1 trauma center that also serves as a safety net hospital for individuals facing high levels of poverty and unemployment. Her ongoing clinical work ensures she remains closely connected to patient care while addressing the challenges faced by underserved communities.
Since relocating to Memphis after two decades in Boston, Dr. Bryant has also taken on the role of director of the STEM in Medicine ecosystem at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In this capacity, she leads initiatives designed to inspire young people from kindergarten through undergraduate studies to develop a science identity and consider careers in healthcare. The program's unique focus on medicine within the broader STEMM framework reflects Dr. Bryant's commitment to cultivating future generations of healthcare professionals.
Prior to her current appointments, Dr. Bryant was involved with academia at Boston Medical Center associated with Boston University School of Medicine beginning in 2017. There, she transitioned from community emergency medicine into academic medicine — a move she considers her most notable achievement due to the courage it required and the opportunities it presented. During her tenure at Boston Medical Center, she participated in a leadership development program where she set out to develop a curriculum for medical students, deliver a national talk in emergency medicine and become an Assistant Dean of Student affairs. Through effective networking and mentorship, she accomplished all three objectives within three years.
For 13 years before entering academia, Dr. Bryant worked as a community emergency medicine doctor in the Boston area. This experience provided her with invaluable exposure to a wide variety of cases, including cardiology, neurology and trauma. Her work during this period laid the foundation for her later focus on teaching about healthcare disparities and advocating for improved health equity.
Dr. Bryant is also recognized as a speaker who addresses topics such as healthcare disparities and social determinants of health at national forums. She has contributed to a violence intervention advocacy program in Boston that uses peer mentors with shared lived experiences to assist patients with conflict management, primary care/mental health resources and educational advancement. She hopes to replicate this impactful program in Memphis by collaborating with local thought leaders.
Throughout her career, Dr. Bryant has maintained a number of professional affiliations that reflect her standing in the field. She is a fellow of both the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. She is also an active member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, New England Medical Association, Bluff City Medical Society. Her participation in the Leadership Tennessee program further highlights her commitment to cross-sector collaboration aimed at supporting Memphis's economy and improving healthcare for Tennesseans.
Dr. Bryant's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in biology from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1996, followed by earning her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2000. She is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and completed executive leadership training as a Next Generation Executive Alum through The Partnership Inc. in 2023. Dr. Bryant is also participating in the Tennessee Medical Association Leadership Lab to develop a curriculum to improve patient quality of care and workplace culture through a trauma-informed verbal de-escalation initiative.
The influence of Dr. Bryant's parents played an essential role in shaping her values and ambitions. They instilled in her the belief that anything is possible through visualization, perseverance and collaboration with others. Their example inspired Dr. Bryant to become the first member of her family to pursue medicine, forging a path defined by compassion and service.
Dr. Bryant views her accomplishments as a means of serving others, crediting the many people who have supported her throughout her career and striving to pay that generosity forward. Central to her message is the belief that everyone is worthy of support and opportunity. She currently travels extensively to deliver talks on trauma-informed care, and while she has occasionally encountered resistance to this work, she remains motivated by the belief that compassion and understanding can be taught. She often credits her father, who taught her that pride in effort matters more than the outcome, telling her that he would be proud of her even in failure, and encouraging her to keep pushing forward.
Beyond her professional commitments, Dr. Bryant is civically engaged as a participant with Run for Our Lives Run Club and has been recognized as a Healthcare Hero during the COVID years in Massachusetts for her dedication during challenging times. She has delivered multiple presentations, including a talk at the National Medical Association meeting in Puerto Rico.
Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Dr. Bryant enjoys running and spending quality time with family and friends outside her professional life. Looking ahead, she aims to develop a violence intervention program tailored for Memphis residents who face barriers accessing primary care due to socioeconomic challenges. She seeks opportunities to connect with communities beyond Memphis to exchange best practices while fostering scientific thinking that encourages critical inquiry over compliance alone. Dr. Bryant also plans to continue traveling nationally as a speaker on issues central to health equity and community well-being.
