NEW YORK, NY, October 07, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Andrew J. Marcus has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Producing paintings and drawings in oils and pencil with a focus on representational painting in the new realism style, Mr. Marcus has distinguished himself as an artist for more than five decades. Recognized for his disciplined approach, he maintains a strict daily studio schedule by logging in and out and dedicating approximately seven hours to his practice each day. While he occasionally sells his artwork privately, he has chosen to remain selective about his public presence while maintaining the integrity of his art practice.
In recent years, Mr. Marcus' work was featured at a corporate art show hosted by Krasdale Foods in Westchester, New York, from 2023 to 2024. This opportunity arose after a curator discovered his work in the book "Conversations: 23 Interviews with Still Life Artists," which was published by Zeuxis in 2024 and included a wide-ranging interview with Mr. Marcus and reproductions of his artwork.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Marcus held a one-man show at Prince Street Gallery in New York in 1972, which received a positive review from the noted critic Joseph Campbell. Among his proudest achievements to date is being singled out by New York Times art critic Hilton Kramer during a 1976 five-gallery exhibition that featured over 200 artists; in his review of the overall show, Mr. Kramer highlighted Mr. Marcus as one of four emerging artists worthy of future attention.
From the 1970's through 2000's Mr. Marcus took a hiatus from exhibiting his work to more fully concentrate on pursuing his own vision as an artist away from issues involved with the commercial art world.
Also committed to education and community engagement, Mr. Marcus co-founded and operated the Rocking Horse Nursery School in New York City alongside his wife from 1980 to 2011. The half-day schedule of the program enabled him to balance his enjoyment of teaching children — including those with special needs — with his ongoing artistic pursuits.
Prior to establishing the nursery school, Mr. Marcus taught at an after-school program in New York during the 1970s. It was there that he met his future wife, who was also a teacher at the time. This role not only contributed to his livelihood but also reinforced his dedication to fostering creativity and learning among young students.
Hailing from an equally accomplished educational background, Mr. Marcus earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in 1968. While at the University of Pennsylvania, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for Outstanding Master's Work in 1971 in recognition of his exceptional abilities as a graduate student.
A significant influence throughout Mr. Marcus' career has been William Kelly, a fellow artist and mentor who achieved international recognition after receiving a Fulbright Scholarship and establishing a prominent career in Australia. Mr. Marcus credits the guidance and encouragement of Mr. Kelly — along with the celebrated painter Catherine Murphy and realist artist Antonio López García — as crucial to both his artistic development and professional outlook.
On a personal level, Mr. Marcus leads a rich and fulfilling family life with deep connections to his community. He and his wife adopted their daughter, Rebecca, from South Korea when she was an infant; today, she is married with a daughter of her own and currently resides in Pleasantville, New York. Outside of his studio practice, he enjoys reading great books, visiting museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and attending gallery exhibitions to enjoy his fellow artists' creations.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Marcus intends to continue dedicating himself fully to his art practice, maintaining the disciplined routine that has defined his 55-year career while finding fulfillment through ongoing creative exploration and meaningful engagement with other artists and admirers of his work.
