Dr. Gelb aspired to become a doctor out of a desire to help others and a passion for medical science. Inspired by his family's legacy at the school, he attended Vanderbilt University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry. Dr. Gelb continued his education at the St. Louis University School of Medicine, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1967. To further his medical career, he completed a residency in pulmonary diseases at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center and a fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, Cardiovascular Research Institute.
