PORTAGE, IN, October 08, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kyle J. Gospodarek, MD, MSEd, has been recognized for achievement in academic medicine.
Dr. Gospodarek has established a distinguished career in academic medicine, currently serving as an assistant professor of clinical family medicine at the Northwest-Gary campus of Indiana University School of Medicine since 2026. In this capacity, he undertakes responsibilities related to instruction, curriculum development and both academic and clinical medical education research. He is recognized for his expertise in academic medicine, medical student education, facilitating small-group learning and study skills instruction.
Dr. Gospodarek's dedication to teaching is reflected in his innovative approach to medical education, as he has witnessed and contributed to the shift toward active learning. His institution now employs a balanced model with equal emphasis on prerecorded lectures and live small-group sessions, fostering deeper understanding through discussion and participation.
From 2018 to 2026, Dr. Gospodarek held the position of lecturer of clinical medicine at the same campus, where he adapted his teaching methods to meet evolving circumstances. Notably, he continued instructing students virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic and again more recently when a derecho left northwest Indiana without power for nearly 10 days, ensuring that education persisted despite significant challenges. Between 2017 and 2025, he served as the director of curriculum and education for Medical Student Missions with Health Corps Haiti.
Dr. Gospodarek's earlier experience includes a postdoctoral fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine's Northwest-Gary campus from 2017 to 2018. Prior to this, he worked as a medical quality improvement consultant for Correctional Health Indiana Inc. at Lake County Jail in Crown Point from 2016 to 2017. His foundational roles in academia began as a chemistry and mathematics tutor at Purdue University North Central from 2006 to 2010 and as a cell biology and genetics lab teaching assistant between 2008 and 2009.
In addition to his primary appointments, Dr. Gospodarek has contributed his expertise as a member of the Senseer Health Inc. advisory board since 2026 and as a consumer reviewer for the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs since 2024. He provides expert perspective for program development, research strategy and national conference planning with the Hydrocephalus Association.
Among Dr. Gospodarek's most meaningful achievements is helping students realize their potential; he considers the thank-you cards displayed on his office corkboard as reminders of his impact on future physicians. He played an instrumental role in bringing the National Hydrocephalus Association's biennial HA Connect Conference to Indianapolis in 2026, serving on the medical host committee and presenting multiple times at an event that drew record attendance.
Beyond his professional roles, Dr. Gospodarek holds memberships in several professional organizations, including the Hydrocephalus Society (International), the Global Health Committee within the Wilderness Medical Society, as well as the Indiana State Medical Association, American College of Physicians Inc. and American Medical Association. He is also a member of the Hydrocephalus Association. His work has been featured in the Post-Tribune in August 2026 and The Times in July 2026.
Dr. Gospodarek earned a Master of Science in adult education from the School of Education at Indiana University Bloomington in 2024, which has informed his approach to curriculum design and active learning strategies. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine (Northwest) in 2016 after completing a Bachelor of Science in biology, summa cum laude, at Purdue University North Central in 2010. His academic journey began with undergraduate coursework at Purdue University in 2005.
Persistence — which Dr. Gospodarek refers to humorously as stubbornness — along with a remarkable support network has been central to his success. His path into academic medicine was shaped by personal health challenges: after surviving a brain aneurysm rupture at age 6 that resulted in hydrocephalus and later being diagnosed with a genetic connective tissue disorder requiring numerous surgeries, he initially intended to pursue clinical practice. However, a shunt malfunction shortly before graduation prevented him from entering residency match, leading him instead toward teaching.
Beyond his professional duties, Dr. Gospodarek has given his time to a range of civic and charitable causes. Since 2024, he has served on the support, education and research committee of the Hydrocephalus Association, and since 2022, he has been an advisory board member for Chive Charities. From 2020 to 2024, he was treasurer and board member for Health Corps Haiti, and he has taken part in mobile clinics in Verrettes, Haiti, with Medical Student Missions. Earlier in his career, he volunteered and advocated with St. Baldrick's Foundation from 2012 to 2014 and with Alliance for Childhood Cancer in 2014.
Dr. Gospodarek has received numerous honors throughout his career. In 2025, he received the Trustees' Teaching Award from Indiana University School of Medicine, and in both 2024 and 2025, he received Consumer Reviewer Honoraria from the U.S. Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs. His earlier recognitions include the Urban Health Initiative Scholarship from Indiana University School of Medicine from 2012 to 2015, the Dr. Daniel Han Memorial Scholarship in 2011 and the Freshman Outstanding Merit Scholarship from Purdue University in 2005.
Dr. Gospodarek's scholarly contributions include presenting sessions and panels at the Hydrocephalus Association Connect National Conferences in Indianapolis in 2026 and Tampa in 2024. In 2025, he led a workshop titled "Effect of Shunt Revisions on Quality of Life" at Engineering in Hydrocephalus in Columbus, Ohio. In 2023, he authored "30 Years of Hydrocephalus Management: A Singular Perspective from Both Sides of the Operating Room Table," which was presented at the Hydrocephalus Research Symposium in Indianapolis.
In addition, Dr. Gospodarek's published work includes research on social determinants affecting postoperative complications, co-authored and published in the Proceedings of IMPRS from 2025 to 2026. He also contributed research on interdisciplinary team-teaching approaches, published in 2022 by the Central Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA) of the AAMC, and wrote "Inspiring Stories: Overcoming Illness" for the AAMC.
Born in Hobart, Dr. Gospodarek enjoys woodworking and spending time with family outside his professional commitments. Looking ahead, he seeks further advancement within academic medicine while deepening involvement with both the Hydrocephalus Association and the worldwide Hydrocephalus Society. He aims to bring dual perspectives as physician and patient into professional dialogues so that all participants can better appreciate shared goals within healthcare advancement.
