LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY, October 19, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Desmond D. Handley has been recognized for achievement in developmental disabilities services.

Mr. Handley's career in developmental disabilities services is marked by a steady progression through increasingly responsible roles, each reflecting his dedication to supporting vulnerable populations. Since 2024, he has served as residential site manager at SCO Family of Services in Ridge, New York. In this capacity, Mr. Handley oversees a six-bed residential setting for men with autism, providing direct, hands-on care and modeling attentive listening to incorporate resident feedback into daily routines. He is responsible for making environmental modifications that promote independence and safety, as well as maintaining open communication with residents, families and staff. His expertise in auditing, time management, payroll, activities coordination, leadership and customer service has been instrumental in his ability to deliver high-quality care and foster a supportive environment.

From 2022 to 2024, Mr. Handley was memory care director at Chelsea Senior Living in Yaphank, New York. During this period, he expanded his skill set in dementia care while managing services tailored to residents with memory-related conditions. His commitment to direct care and effective communication contributed to residents' well-being and the smooth operation of the facility.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Handley served as site manager at Community Services for Every1 in Buffalo, New York, from 2010 to 2022. In this role, he managed various settings including emergency shelters, apartment programs and residential care facilities. He is especially proud of moments such as helping a pregnant resident at a domestic violence shelter by staying with her through the delivery of her son after she specifically requested his presence. Another significant achievement was organizing a long-awaited trip to Hawaii for his favorite resident, Paul, in December 2018. Mr. Handley coordinated with a travel agent and a community habilitation worker to ensure Paul's visit included Pearl Harbor, the islands of Hawaii and Oahu, Waikiki Beach and a luau — fulfilling a dream Paul had cherished for years. Throughout his tenure at Community Services for Every1, Mr. Handley demonstrated adaptability by transitioning from direct support professional to assistant manager, and then to residence manager, while consistently earning strong survey results.

Mr. Handley's academic background has supported his professional growth and achievements. He is currently pursuing a diploma in medical office management and administration at Hunter Business School. This training is equipping him with the skills to transition into medical office management roles. He earned his high school diploma in general studies from International Preparatory School at Grover Cleveland #187 in Buffalo in 2003.

In addition to formal education, Mr. Handley holds several certifications that enhance his capabilities within developmental disabilities services and healthcare environments. He is recognized as a certified dementia practitioner and holds credentials as a home health aide, as well as Narcan certification and first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification from the American Heart Association.

Empathy, compassion and professionalism are qualities that Mr. Handley credits for his success. He believes that setbacks do not preclude fulfillment when individuals have access to supportive people and resources that encourage growth and resilience. These values have guided him since he began working at a women's shelter for domestic violence and abuse early in his career — an experience that inspired him to dedicate nearly two decades to serving individuals with autism, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders and dementia.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mr. Handley maintains close relationships with his mother, aunt and father. He relocated from Buffalo to Long Island primarily because of his relationship with his partner; together, they share their home with Colonel, their two-year-old miniature schnauzer. Travel is one of Mr. Handley's greatest passions — he enjoys exploring new foods and visiting major cities across Europe such as Rome, Athens, Paris and London. Recently, he has developed an interest in fantasy television shows featuring immortal themes, such as "Interview with the Vampire" and "The Vampire Diaries." Additionally, he enjoys reading about ancient civilizations and has a keen enthusiasm for cars.

Looking ahead, Mr. Handley intends to expand into medical office management by building on the training he is completing at Hunter Business School so he can work in or manage a medical office handling billing and coding responsibilities. He is also considering coordinator or director roles within developmental disabilities services but continues to value the direct advocacy work he performs on behalf of residents onsite. As he advances professionally while nurturing his long-term relationship, achieving an improved work-life balance remains an important goal.

Mr. Handley's career reflects a deep commitment to those he serves, as well as remarkable adaptability across diverse care settings — qualities that have established him as an expert in developmental disabilities services, autism care and dementia care.
