BURKE, VA, October 21, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tom Gaughan has been recognized for achievement in cloud infrastructure, automation and data analytics.
Marked by his technical mastery and longstanding commitment to enhanced customer outcomes, Mr. Gaughan's professional journey reflects a distinguished record across information technology, computer software and cloud infrastructure. Since 2013, he has served at SAS Institute-SAS Federal from the Arlington, Virginia office location and his home office, visiting many client sites throughout that time. Mr. Gaughan entered SAS as a Senior Technical Consultant and worked his way through to the Principal Technical Architect designation via a series of well-earned promotions. Fueling the company's mission to turn data analytics into effective technological solutions, he maintains multiple platforms' availabilities, supports the business needs of his customers, configures and tests system fixes and ensures the continuous operation of systems critical to the customer's mission.
A defining moment in Mr. Gaughan's career occurred during the summer of 2022 when he led a complex migration from the legacy SAS 9.4 platform to the new SAS Viya 3.5 platform at an extraordinarily important customer. Confronted with the challenge of migrating approximately 250,000 file attachments without an existing supported method, he independently developed an innovative solution by constructing unique uniform resource locator (URL) endpoints for each attachment; this approach enabled the extraction and ingestion of all attachments into the new platform under significant time constraints. He later documented this methodology in an influential paper titled "An Approach to Extracting Attachments from the SAS 9.4 Content Server", which remains his proudest professional achievement to date.
Before joining SAS, Mr. Gaughan excelled as a Specialist Senior at Deloitte Consulting in the Washington metropolitan area from 2011 to 2013, further honing his skills in advanced analytics and enterprise solutions. His tenure as a Senior SAS Developer at Longevity Consulting from 2010 to 2011 deepened his specialization with advanced technologies.
From 2007 to 2010, Mr. Gaughan held the role of Principal Programmer/Analyst at AOL (America Online) in Dulles, Virginia — the culmination of nearly eight years with the software development leader. Prior to that, he served there as a Senior Programmer/Analyst from 2005 to 2007 and Systems Analyst from 2002 to 2004, all of which allowed him to develop a comprehensive understanding of large-scale systems analysis and programming.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Gaughan utilized his technical acumen within the financial sector as a Business Technologist at Fannie Mae in Washington from 2000 to 2002, during which he began working extensively with SAS software. He started his technical career as a programmer and analyst at GEICO in Chevy Chase, Maryland, for three years after initially joining the company as an actuarial assistant in 1996.
Hailing from an equally accomplished academic background, Mr. Gaughan earned a Master's degree in Information Systems from the Computer Science Department of Virginia Tech in 2002, successfully completing this program just before the birth of his daughter. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Montclair State University, graduating as the Outstanding Senior in Mathematics in 1992.
Dedicated to the ideals of continuous professional growth, Mr. Gaughan earned the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner credentials through Amazon Web Services in 2025. Furthermore, he earned the Microsoft AZ-900 certificate in 2023, is a SAS-Certified Base Programmer and has maintained his Project Management Professional (PMP) with the Project Management Institute since 2008.
Reflecting on his storied journey to date, Mr. Gaughan attributes his accomplishments to focusing on underlying business needs rather than purely technical interests. By prioritizing the goals of his customers over technological novelty, he has consistently delivered solutions that align with his employers' objectives and drive sustainable success.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mr. Gaughan is known for his commitment to civic-minded initiatives. He has served as President of his HOA for years and performed various volunteer roles in the Scouts, both at the Cub Scout and Boy Scout levels. Mr. Gaughan also served as a judge for a number of years for the Odyssey of the Mind organization.
On a personal level, Mr. Gaughan is happily married and the proud father of two children — a 24-year-old daughter and a 22-year-old son — whose arrivals marked deeply fulfilling milestones alongside his academic and professional achievements. Outside of work, he enjoys reading history and nonfiction books, watching educational as well as entertaining programs and films, staying fit via numerous gym visits and participating in reformer Pilates classes. On occasion with others, he'll hike in the Virginia mountains, appreciating the natural beauty of his chosen state.
Determined to further his impact in the coming years, Mr. Gaughan intends to deepen his expertise with the AWS Cloud Development Kit while pursuing Claude certifications and further AWS certifications. He remains committed to advancing technically and plans to continue contributing at SAS for as long as possible — a reflection of his longstanding legacy of leadership, innovation, selflessness and lifelong learning.
