MERCED, CA, October 28, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dora Alicia Medina-Brum has been recognized for outstanding achievement in education, celebrating a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades of dedication to student advocacy, educational leadership, and service to families and communities.

Throughout her career, Ms. Medina-Brum has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to empowering students, fostering meaningful relationships, and creating opportunities for those facing educational, social, and personal challenges. Having served in numerous educational roles and capacities, she has devoted much of her career to supporting at-risk and high-risk students, foster youth, and students in alternative education settings. Her professional philosophy is grounded in the belief that every student deserves to be seen, heard, valued, and provided with the guidance and encouragement necessary to succeed.

Since July 2022, Ms. Medina-Brum has served as learning director with Merced City School District in Merced, California. In this capacity, she provides instructional leadership, supports teachers and school personnel, addresses student behavioral and social-emotional needs, and collaborates with families to foster safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments. Her responsibilities encompass student advocacy, intervention planning, schoolwide behavioral systems, instructional support, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to address barriers to academic and personal success.

A defining chapter of Ms. Medina-Brum's professional journey has been her work as a school counselor, a role that continues to shape her approach to educational leadership. She finds particular fulfillment in providing students with the guidance, encouragement, and understanding they deserve but may not always have access to. Her counseling philosophy emphasizes helping students understand not only expectations and consequences but also the reasons behind them. Whether addressing conflict, bullying, or other challenging behaviors, she believes it is essential to help young people recognize how their choices affect themselves and others, as well as the potential long-term consequences of their actions.

Ms. Medina-Brum carries this philosophy into her administrative role, approaching student discipline as an opportunity for accountability, reflection, and personal growth. She believes that students must understand that actions have consequences, while also recognizing that mistakes do not have to define their future. Central to her approach is a whole-child philosophy, which acknowledges the importance of addressing students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs while providing them with the tools to make positive decisions.

She is also a strong advocate of the "power of yet," a growth mindset principle that encourages students to recognize that their current abilities, circumstances, or challenges do not determine their ultimate potential. Drawing from her own life experiences, she reminds students that they may not have mastered a skill, reached a goal, or overcome an obstacle yet, but that perseverance, guidance, and a willingness to learn can create opportunities for growth.

Prior to her current position, Ms. Medina-Brum served as a high school assistant principal, further expanding her experience in educational administration, student services, and schoolwide leadership. Her professional background also includes serving as a classroom teacher, independent studies and homeschool teacher, substitute teacher, and instructional assistant. These diverse experiences have provided her with a comprehensive understanding of education and strengthened her ability to connect with students, families, and educators from a variety of backgrounds.

Throughout her career, Ms. Medina-Brum has remained particularly passionate about advocating for students who may otherwise feel overlooked or disconnected from traditional educational systems. Whether working with foster youth, students experiencing academic or behavioral challenges, or young people navigating alternative educational pathways, she has consistently emphasized the importance of building relationships, recognizing individual strengths, and helping students envision possibilities beyond their present circumstances.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, Ms. Medina-Brum has demonstrated a commitment to mentorship and the development of future educational leaders. She has mentored aspiring administrators and supervised counseling interns, sharing her professional knowledge and experiences to support others entering the field. She maintains active professional memberships with the American School Counseling Association, the California Association of School Counselors, and the Association of California School Administrators, reflecting her dedication to continued professional growth, educational advocacy, and effective leadership practices.

Ms. Medina-Brum earned an Associate of Arts degree from Merced Community College in 1997, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from California State University, Stanislaus, in 2004. She continued her educational journey, earning a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Counselor Education from the same institution in 2015. As a first-generation college graduate and the daughter of Mexican immigrants, her educational achievements hold profound personal significance. Growing up in a family that valued hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice, she learned the importance of determination and personal responsibility. Her mother's limited formal education further inspired her to pursue opportunities that previous generations of her family had not experienced.

Ms. Medina-Brum's decision to enter the field of education was deeply influenced by her own experiences growing up in Merced. As a student who participated in the Migrant Education Program and faced significant challenges during her adolescent years, including becoming a teen mother, she understood firsthand the obstacles that can affect a student's educational journey. Having experienced periods when guidance and support were limited, Ms. Medina-Brum became determined to serve as the advocate and source of encouragement she once needed.

Rather than allowing her circumstances to define her future, Ms. Medina-Brum transformed those experiences into a lifelong commitment to helping others. Her personal journey continues to influence her professional practice, allowing her to approach students and families with empathy, understanding, and an unwavering belief in their potential. She recognizes that students' circumstances do not determine their worth or their ability to achieve success.

Born and raised in Merced, Ms. Medina-Brum takes particular pride in serving the same school district where she attended elementary and middle school. Returning to her community as an educational leader represents a meaningful full-circle journey and reinforces her commitment to giving back to the families and community that helped shape her.

Beyond her professional career, Ms. Medina-Brum remains actively engaged in her faith and community. Guided by her Catholic faith, she supports her parish church and serves as a mentor to individuals participating in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). She credits her faith, humility, perseverance, and the support of loved ones as important sources of strength throughout her personal and professional journey.

Family remains central to Ms. Medina-Brum's life. She is happily married to a fellow education professional who serves as a school custodian and classified staff member. Together, they are the proud parents of five children, whom she affectionately refers to as her "fabulous five." Ms. Medina-Brum has also joyfully embraced the title of "Fabuela," cherishing the opportunity to experience the special bond of grandparenthood with her young granddaughter.

Outside of her professional and community commitments, Ms. Medina-Brum enjoys hiking, watching movies, reading, dancing, listening to music, and maintaining an active lifestyle. She values spending quality time with her husband, children, granddaughter, and loved ones, whether through evening walks, family gatherings, dinners, or movie nights.

Reflecting on her nearly three decades in education, Ms. Medina-Brum considers her greatest accomplishment to be the relationships she has cultivated and the positive difference she has made in the lives of students and families. While her career has included numerous roles and responsibilities, her purpose has remained constant: to advocate for students, empower families, and ensure that no child feels alone in navigating life's challenges.

"I believe every child deserves guidance, understanding, and someone who believes in them. My role is not simply to tell students what they did wrong, but to help them understand why their choices matter and how those choices can shape their future. I believe in accountability, but I also believe in second chances and the power of yet. Just because a student hasn't succeeded today doesn't mean they won't succeed tomorrow," Ms. Medina-Brum shared.

Her journey from an at-risk student and teen mother to a first-generation college graduate, school counselor, and educational leader serves as a testament to the transformative power of education, perseverance, and the belief that every individual has the capacity to overcome adversity and achieve meaningful success. Her story reflects a deeply held conviction that one's past does not define one's future and that life's greatest challenges can become the foundation for inspiring and empowering others.
