HOUSTON, TX, October 28, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert E. Alker has been recognized for achievement in the art industry.

Mr. Alker's distinguished career in the art industry spans more than six decades, marked by a steadfast commitment to integrity and expertise.

Since 1971, he has served as director of the family-owned gallery GALERIE BARBIZON in Houston, where he has been deeply involved in buying and selling fine art. He became a member of the Appraisers Association of America in 1975 to appraise fine art. Since then, he has appraised artwork, researched auction records for replacement values, and advised collectors on both decorative and investment purchases.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Alker's meticulous approach to examining paintings for their intended messages has earned him a reputation for transparency and honesty, qualities he considers essential in an industry where clients often rely heavily on the dealer's knowledge. Mr. Alker's gallery also features Art Deco furniture, reflecting his appreciation for this style.

Earlier in his career, during the early 1990s, Mr. Alker was commissioned by an international company to purchase art with an annual budget. This role required him to travel extensively throughout Europe. The experience allowed him to meet influential figures in the art world and further refine his ability to discern the messages artists convey through their work. Mr. Alker treasures these interactions and considers them integral to his understanding of fine art.

Prior to establishing his own gallery, Mr. Alker worked as an art director at his family's gallery in New York City, where the gallery participated in the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair for a 6-month duration each year.

In the years after the gallery also participated in:

Expo '74 (1974 Spokane Washington World's Fair)
1982 Knoxville World's Fair, (Knoxville, Tennessee)
1984 World's Fair (New Orleans, Louisiana World Exposition)
1986 Expo 86 (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada World Exposition)

He was also the museum director of a private museum, featuring High Renaissance paintings from a private collection.

His entry into the profession was inspired by his father, Gustav, who had been an art dealer in Europe since 1928 and continued his work after immigrating to the United States in 1956 with the family. During this period, Mr. Alker developed a keen eye for valuable pieces, notably acquiring Hungarian masterworks at auctions before their value surged after 1990.

Throughout his career, Mr. Alker has demonstrated exceptional skill in fine art dealing and appraisal as well as knowledge of Art Deco furniture. He is recognized as an expert in these areas and is a member of the Appraisers Association of America, reflecting his standing within the professional community.

Mr. Alker's academic journey began at Queens College in New York City, where he started with coursework in electrical engineering and switched to art history. Although initially focused on engineering, he soon realized his passion lay elsewhere and transitioned to art history after spending weekends at art shows discussing paintings with others. This academic foundation provided him with critical analytical skills that have supported his success as an appraiser and dealer.

Reflecting on his career, Mr. Alker credits much of his knowledge not only to formal education but also to countless hours spent researching artists and auction records in libraries before the advent of computers, a practice he continues today through diligent online research. He also visited and studied art works at museums and fine art galleries. Trust and honesty define Mr. Alker's work. When he does not know the answer to a question about a piece, he says so and, at the client's request, researches it and reports his findings.

Mr. Alker's achievements have been recognized with honors, including being named Art Dealer of the Year and winning the Texas Chess Championship in 1974. He has contributed creatively to the field with projects such as "Art Deco Inspiration," which highlights his dedication to sharing knowledge about artistic styles.

Beyond professional accomplishments, Mr. Alker values family heritage and personal growth. He takes pride in his family's history; his great-grandfather served as the first vice mayor of Budapest when Buda and Pest united in 1873, leaving a lasting legacy commemorated by a street named after the family. An interview conducted with Mr. Alker by a Spanish television journalist — later used in the journalist's university thesis — was translated into English by Mr. Alker's daughter and stands as a testament to the impact of his insights on others.

In addition to his work in the arts, Mr. Alker enjoys playing chess, ping-pong, and tennis in his leisure time. Looking ahead, he intends to continue working as an art dealer and appraiser at his Houston gallery for as long as possible, driven by a genuine love for his profession and satisfaction with all he has accomplished throughout his enduring career.
